Bioaccumulation of currently used pesticides for earthworms

Abstract:

This thesis is a review about problems concerning currently used pesticides and their possible transport into the bodies of earthworms. The review is focused on bioaccumulation of currently used pesticides and the factors influential on their bioavailability in soil, like properties of the soil and chemical properties of the studied compound. For better understanding, an extensive chart summarizing main data from the available studies was made. Only few studies were studying bioaccumulation on more than one species of earthworms, while the most studied species were Eisenia fetida. In bioaccumulation tests, various samples of real soils and also samples of artificial soils were used. The comparison of the bioaccumulation of currently used pesticides described in the studies is difficult to perform. It was found out, that bioaccumulation of currently used pesticides depends on the properties of the soil, specifically on the organic material content. However, there was not investigated any clear dependency between the bioaccumulation and the hydrophobicity of the studied compounds. The experimental part of thesis is dealing with investigation of bioaccumulation of five model compounds into earthworms Eisenia andrei, in order to compare the differences between the studied compouds, especially how their concentration and length of exposure affect the bioaccumulation and how does bioaccumulation in real agricutural soils with historical pesticide residues differ from laboratory contaminted sands. The experiment was held under laboratory conditions, while there was investigated bioaccumulation from samples of contaminated sands with different content of currently used pesticides, and from four samples of real contaminated agricutural soils. The experiment was finished in two time variations, after 14 and 21 days. Because of high mortality of earthworms,the experiment was finished after 7 days for some of contaminated sand samples.The results showed, that the concentration of accumulated currently used pesticides in earthworms had tendency to get higher with the higher concentration in laboratory sands, but got smaller in the time scale. There was investigated, that pendimethalin had the highest rate of bioaccumulation to earthworms in soils, conazole fungicides like tebuconazole and epoxiconazole showed smaller rate in bioaccumulation. Because of small numbers of recent studies, we can‘ be sure of the rates of bioaccumulation of these compounds into the earthworms. That means, that we also do not know well its interactions in soils and its impact on soil fertility, therefore this topic should be further studied.

Abstract:

Tato práce obsahuje jednak rešerši o současně používaných pesticidech a jejich možném transferu do žížal, jednak vlastní experimentální výsledky. Rešerše je zaměřená na bioakumulaci současně použivaných pesticidů a faktory ovlivňující jejich biodostupnost, jako jsou vlastnosti půdní matrice a chemické vlastnosti studované látky. S použitím rozsáhlé tabulky sumarizující hlavní data o dostupných studiích se vedla diskuze o vlivu různých faktorů na bioakumulaci současně používaných pesticidů v žížalách. Zjistilo se, že jen v malém počtu studií se vedli bioakumulační testy na více než jedném druhu žížal, a že nejvíce zkoumaným druhem byl Eisenia fetida. V studiích se použili různorodé reálné půdy a také artificiální půdy. Různorodost používaných půdních substrátů v studiích způsobovala potíže při porovnávání bioaukumulace zkoumaných pesticidů mezi jednotlivými studiemi. Zjistilo se, že bioakumulace současně používaných pesticidů velice závisí od vlastností půdy, specificky od velikosti obsahu organického materiálu. Nebyla ale pozorovaná přímá souvislost mezi bioakumulací a hydrofobicitou zkoumaných látek. Experimentální část se zaměřuje na bioakumulaci pěti modelových látek do žížal Eisenia andrei s cílem zjistit, jak se liší jednotlivé látky, jakou roli hraje koncentrace a délka expozice a jak se liší bioakumulace v reálných zemědělských půdách s obsahem historických reziduí pesticidů od bioakumulace v laboratorně kontaminovaném písku. Experiment probíhal za laboratorních podmínek, přičemž se osobitně stanovovala bioakumulace ve vzorcích písku s různou koncentrácí současně používaných pesticidů a ve čtyřech vzorcích reálně kontaminované zemědělské půdy. Experiment se ukončoval za použití dvou časových variant, a to ukončení po 14 a po 21 dnech. Z důvodu vysoké mortality žížal se experiment musel ukončit u specifických vzorcích písku už po 7 dnech. Výsledky ukázali , že koncentrace současně používaných pesticidů v žížalách se měla tendenci zvyšovat se zvyšující koncentrací v laboratorně kontaminovaném písku, ale snižovat pod vlivem času. Dle výsledků bioakumulace současně používaných pesticidů v reálných půdách se nejvíce do žížal akumuloval pendimethalin, méně konazolové fungicidy jako tebuconazole a epoxiconazole. Jak rešerše, tak výsledky ukázali, že problematikou bioakumulace současně používaných pesticidů v žížalách je důležité sa zabývat, a taky je potřebný podrobnější výzkum. Z důvodu současně malého počtu realizovaných studií o téhle problematice dosud nevíme dostatečně odhadnout bioakumulaci těchto látek do žížal, tím pádem ani jejich interakce v půde a vliv na půdní kvalitu.
