Historical analysis of the evolution of teaching descriptive geometry at Czech universities

Abstract:

Jako věda existuje deskriptivní geometrie od konce 18. století. Základní kámen pro vědeckou výstavbu této disciplíny položil francouzský geometr Gaspard Monge ve svém díle Géométrie descriptive)(1799). S jeho jménem je rovněž spjat vznik a úspěšná činnost první technické vysoké školy na světě, École Polytechnique (Paříž, 1795). Podle vzoru pařížské techniky vznikaly další technické vysoké školy, na kterých se deskriptivní geometrie během druhé poloviny 19. století stala jedním z nejdůležitějších předmětů. Cílem disertační práce je zmapovat vývoj výuky deskriptivní geometrie na českých vysokých školách, a to nejen technikách, ale i univerzitách. V práci se omezíme se pouze na klasickou deskriptivní geometrii, tzn. nebudeme se zabývat předměty příbuznými, například diferenciální či analytickou geometrií. Ve čtyřech časově ohraničených kapitolách si projdeme výuku deskriptivní geometrie na jednotlivých vysokých školách. Kapitoly jsou doplněny i stručným přehledem výuky deskriptivní geometrie na středních školách. Stěžejní část práce je věnována naší nejstarší technice - Vysokému učení technickému v Praze. První přednášky z deskriptivní geometrie se zde objevují již ve 30. letech 19. století. Přelom 19. a 20. století znamená v našich zemích rozmach deskriptivní geometrie. Velký přínosem pro výuku deskriptivní geometrie bylo založení druhé techniky v Brně v roce 1900. Jedním ze zakladatelů byl Jan Sobotka, který je rovněž autorem první ucelené česky psané učebnice deskriptivní geometrie u nás (Deskriptivní geometrie promítání parallelního, 1906). Postavení deskriptivní geometrie na univerzitách bylo jiné než na technikách, kde byla deskriptiva jedním ze stěžejních předmětů. Na univerzitách studovali hlavně budoucí učitelé, a tak byla deskriptiva jen jedním z předmětů, které zvyšovaly kvalifikaci středoškolských učitelů. Přednášky z deskriptivní geometrie pro budoucí učitele byly až do 20. let 20. století vypisovány hlavně na technikách. V období první republiky začíná pomalý odklon od deskriptivní geometrie, který je završen po druhé světové válce. Výuka se začíná omezovat na základní promítání, část látky je přesunuta do doporučených přednášek. Část výuky se také přesouvá do počítačových učeben.

Abstract:

Descriptive geometry as a science has been established since the late 18th century. The foundation stone of the scientific discipline was laid down by a French geometer Gaspard Monge in his work Géométrie descriptive (1799). Foundation and successful operation of the first technical university in the world, École Polytechnique (Paris, 1795), is also connected with his name. Following the model of the Paris polytechnic, several other technical universities were established during the second half of the 19th century. Descriptive geometry became one of the most important subjects there. The aim of this thesis is to map the development of teaching descriptive geometry at Czech universities: both at common universities and at technical universities. The work will be aimed on the traditional descriptive geometry only; this means we will not study related subjects such as differential and analytic geometry. In four chapters dedicated to different periods of time, we will describe teaching of descriptive geometry at various universities. Individual chapters are accompanied by a brief overview of descriptive geometry teaching on secondary schools. The fundamental part is devoted to our oldest technology university - Czech Technical University in Prague, where the first lessons in descriptive geometry took place in the thirties of the 19th century. The end of the 19th and the beginning of 20th century is a time of expansion of descriptive geometry in our country. A great benefit for teaching descriptive geometry was the establishment of a second technical university in Brno in 1900. One of its founders, Jan Sobotka, is also an author of the first comprehensive descriptive geometry textbook written in Czech (Deskriptivní geometrie promítání parallelního, 1906). The status of descriptive geometry at common universities was different than at technical universities, where it represented one of the key subjects. Most students at the common universities were teachers-to-be, and so descriptive geometry was only one of the subjects increasing qualification of secondary teachers. Until the twenties of 20th century, descriptive geometry lessons for future teachers were held mostly at technical universities. During the era of the First Republic, a slow shift from descriptive geometry begins, which is completed after the Second World War. Teaching is becoming limited to the basic projection, some topics are moved voluntary (recommended) subjects. A part of teaching is also moving into computer classrooms.
