Mind - Body Theory: Reductive and Non-reductive Physicalism

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problémem mysli a těla, konkrétně tím, proč fyzikalismus není dostatečnou pravdou, ačkoliv žijeme (doufáme v to) v materiálním světě. Hlavním tématem je kritika redukce ve fyzikalismu, prolínání teorií behaviorismu, dualismu, funkcionalismu, emergentismu a dalších teorií. Dále práce řeší problém qualií, intencionality, supervenience a emergence. Práce se záměrně se nezabývá pitváním samotného fyzikalismu ani dalších teorií, naopak na něj nahlíží z opačné strany a spíše, než aby řešila jeho pravdy, které jako lidé můžeme "intuitivně" přijmout, tak řeší hlediska, která fyzikalismus a jeho reduktivní formy staví do pozice zatím nedokonalé a v současné době, vzhledem k vědeckým poznatkům neurověd, spíše "odvážné" teorie. Práce se do hloubky nevěnuje žádné teorii a není tak určena jako shrnutí teorií o mysli a těle, ale záměrně naráží na jejich střety a snaží se popsat jevy, teorie a spory, které jsou překážkou v redukci našeho těla a mysli pomocí reduktivních fyzikalistických metod. Závěr práce a celkový smysl práce vyplývá z jejího obsahu a má nabádat k podpoře nereduktivních forem fyzikalismu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the mind-body problem. It is based on fact that physicalism is not regarded as sufficient truth even if we admit the fact that we are living in a material world. The main topic of this thesis concerns criticism of reduction in physicalism and interconnectedness of this theory with theory of behaviorism, dualism, functionalism, emergentism and other related theories. This work also talks about so called "qualia" problem, intentionality, supervenience and also about emergence in philosophy. The main concern of this diploma thesis is not to simply analyze physicalism, but to create a different look on it, with respect to intuitive truths connected with this theory. This thesis puts physicalism and its reductive forms into position of imperfect and according to current neurosciences rather courageous theories. In the research of this thesis, none of theory-explanations within mind-body problem is meant to concern all points of view of a particular theory. It is meant to display phenomena, theories and arguments that are creating some kind of a barrier in reduction of our body and mind problem, because some problems in it cannot be solved by mere physicalism. This thesis supports the idea of emergentism, but in the conclusion the final purpose of this work is meant to be a support of non-reductive forms of physicalism.
