Language change and variation in former British territories: Tanzania

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the linguistic changes in the territory of Tanzania. It depicts its historical development from the times before the coming of the first Europeans, through the period of the rule of the two superpowers, up to the changes occurring after the political independence was reached. Throughout, the reader becomes familiar with the two nowadays already inseparable languages connected to the territory. He learns about their influence on both the cultural-historical and political situation and their shaping of the character of particular periods. Apart form that, the thesis deals with their way to standardization and their particular forms, as well as their position and function in the recent times. The aim is then to evaluate the overall situation and to think about the future of the two languages.

Abstract:

Práce pojednává o jazykových změnách na území Tanzánie. Zachycuje její historický vývoj od dob před příchodem prvních Evropanů, přes období kdy zde panovaly dvě kolonizační velmoci, až ke změnám nastávajícím po získání politické nezávislosti. V průběhu se čtenář seznamuje se dvěma jazyky dnes již neodmyslitelně spjatými s tímto územím. Dovídá se o jejich vlivech jak na kulturně-historickou tak i politickou situaci, a jejich formování charakteru jednotlivých období. Kromě toho práce pojednává o jejich cestě ke standardizaci a o jejich jednotlivých formách, jak i jejich postavení a působení v současné době. Cílem práce je pak zhodnotit situaci jako takovou a zamyslet se nad budoucností oněch dvou jazyků.
