Metabolism of temperate bats during active period

Abstract:

Letouni (Chiroptera) se v oblasti mírného pásu setkávají s náročnými podmínkami, které silně ovlivňují jejich životní cyklus. Rešeršní část této práce zkoumá vliv těchto podmínek v období aktivity letounů. Ti jsou nuceni se adaptovat na měnící se klima a sezonalitu potravy zejména adaptací svých reprodukčních cyklů a termoregulace. Cílem empirické části této práce byla analýza změn úrovně klidového metabolismu využitím open-flow respirometrie u samic netopýra velkého (Myotis myotis) během období březosti. Dosavadní znalosti o energetické náročnosti během reprodukce, zejména březosti, jsou minimální a pokrývají jen několik málo druhů. Výsledky této práce představují vůbec první ucelené informace o vývoji energetické náročnosti v průběhu březosti u netopýra velkého. S vývojem a růstem embrya se samicím zvyšuje i spotřeba energie. Analýza ukazuje statisticky významný rozdíl mezi hodnotami spotřebované energie během ranné a pozdní fáze březosti. Zvýšená úroveň metabolismu v poslední fázi březosti spojená s pozorovanou absencí strnulosti naznačuje důležitost brzkého porodu pro samici.

Abstract:

Bats (Chiroptera) encounter challenging conditions in the temperate zone, which strongly influence their life cycle. This bachelor's thesis examines the influence of these conditions during the active period of their lives. They are forced to adjust to changing climatic conditions and food seasonality by adapting their reproductive cycles and thermoregulation. The aim of the empirical part of this work was the analysis of changes in resting metabolic rate by using open-flow respirometry in female greater mouse-eared bats (Myotis myotis) during gestation. Current knowledge of energy demands during repro-duction, especially pregnancy, is minimal and covers only a few species. The results of this work show the first comprehensive information on the development of energy demands during pregnancy in the greater mouse-eared bat. As the embryo develops and grows, the female bat's energy consumption also increases. The analysis shows a statistically significant difference between the values of energy consumed during the early and late stages of gestation. The increased resting metabolic rate in the last stage of pregnancy, combined with the observed absence of torpor, suggests the importance of early parturition for the female.
