Influence of temperature extremes during embryogenesis on life history and behaviour in newts

Anotácia:

Klimatické zmeny nespôsobujú len zmeny priemerných teplôt; ale aj väčšiu frekvenciu a intenzitu teplotných extrémov, nazývaných aj vlny horúčav. Tieto extrémne teplotné udalosti majú vážne dôsledky na stav a populačnú dynamiku ektotermných živočíchov, najmä počas embryonálneho štádia, kedy nie sú schopné aktívne uniknúť tepelnému stresu. Doterajší výskum vplyvu tepelných extrémov na znaky embryonálnej histórie života bol zameraný hlavne na plazy, napriek tomu že obojživelníky sú týmito zmenami ohrozené najviac. Účel tejto práce je dvojaký: (1) zhodnotiť súčasné poznatky o tom, ako teplotné extrémy ovplyvňujú životnú históriu, metabolizmus a správanie ektotermných živočíchov, najmä obojživelníkov, a (2) preskúmať, ako intenzita a načasovanie teplotných extrémov ovplyvňujú znaky embryonálneho života a správanie mláďat u mloka horského. Výsledky laboratórneho experimentu ukázali, že vystavenie vysokým teplotám znižuje rýchlosť embryonálneho vývoja a veľkosť mláďat, ale bez významného vplyvu na prežitie embryí. Najvyšší teplotný režim zvýšil aj pohybovú aktivitu lariev. Tieto zistenia naznačujú, že embryá mloka horského nie sú ohrozené súčasnými teplotnými extrémami v ich vodných biotopoch, a že druhová teplotná tolerancia je obmedzená inými ekologickými a fyziologickými charakteristikami, než je zraniteľnosť embryí voči teplotným extrémom.

Abstract:

Climate change is causing more than just changes to average temperatures; it is also resulting in the higher frequency and magnitude of extreme temperatures, heat waves. These extreme temperature events have serious consequences for the fitness and population dynamics of ectotherms, especially during the embryonic stage when they are unable to escape thermal stress through behavior. While research on the impact of thermal extremes on embryonic life history traits has been heavily focused on squamate reptiles, amphibians, the vertebrate group most threatened by climate change, have received limited attention. The purpose of this thesis is twofold: (1) to review the current knowledge on how temperature extremes affect the life histories, energetics, and behavior of ectotherms, mainly amphibians, and (2) to examine how the magnitude and timing of thermal extremes affect embryonic life history traits and hatchling behavior in alpine newts. The results of laboratory factorial experiment showed that exposure to high temperatures reduces embryonic developmental rate and hatchling size, but without significant effect on embryonic survival. The highest temperature regime also increased the locomotion activity of larvae. These findings suggest that newt embryos are not currently threatened by the magnitude of thermal extremes in their aquatic habitats, and that species thermal tolerance is limited by other ecophysiological characteristics than embryonic vulnerability to thermal extremes.
