Eye of the teacher: Using eye tracking to explore professional vision of teachers and teachers gaze

Abstract:

Táto dizertačná práca sa zaoberá témou využitia technológie sledovania očných pohybov (eye tracking) v behaviorálnom výskume učiteľov v prostredí školskej triedy, konkrétne ich vizuálnej pozornosti venovanej jednotlivým študentom počas vyučovania. Práca si kladie dva kľúčové ciele: otestovať a preukázať vhodnosť technológie eye tracking vo výskume vzdelávania a poskytnúť empirické dôkazy z relevantných oblastí vzdelávania získaných pomocou tejto technológie. Oba ciele sú priamo obsiahnuté v štruktúre tejto práce. Jadro dizertačnej práce tvoria tri samostatné štúdie (jedna prehľadová a dve empirické štúdie), ktoré skúmajú fenomény vzdelávania, vyskytujúce sa v procese reálnej výuky. Štúdie boli realizované pomocou najmodernejšej mobilnej technológie eye tracking umožňujúcej zaznamenávanie množstva originálnych behaviorálnych dát z výuky v českej školskej triede. Použitá metodológia a poznatky prezentované v rámci tejto dizertačnej práce nielen kriticky diskutujú a revidujú existujúce výskumné prístupy, ale zdôrazňujú aj potenciál a význam moderných technológií pre empirický výskum v oblasti vzdelávania. Prvá štúdia, prehľadová, zhrnula a rozobrala možnosti technológie eye tracking v oblasti vzdelávania. Prezentované boli teoretické východiská a výsledky prehľadovej štúdie výskumu eye tracking vo vzdelávaní s dôrazom na prostredie školskej triedy. Druhá štúdia bola zameraná na skúmanie pohľadu učiteľa počas výuky a po nej. Okuliare na sledovanie pohybu očí (mobilné eye tracking zariadenie) sa použili na zaznamenanie pohľadu trochu učiteľov počas reálneho vyučovania (mód IN). Dáta z pohľadov učiteľov sa potom porovnali s tradičnejšími výstupmi sledovania vizuálnej pozornosti získanými na základe videa zachytenými remote (diaľkovým) eye tracking zariadením (mód ON) po vyučovaní. Porovnanie módov IN a ON z hľadiska času zotrvania pohľadu učiteľov na konkrétnych študentoch sa uskutočnilo pomocou porovnávania časovej osi a korelačných metód. Zistenia ukázali, že najväčšie rozdiely v pozornosti venovanej jednotlivým študentom sa vyskytli vtedy, keď študent, s ktorým učiteľ počas danej situácie komunikoval, nebol priamo viditeľný na zábere kamery. Aj keď boli individuálne rozdiely vo vzorcoch pohľadu v móde IN aj ON, všetci traja učitelia z našej výskumnej vzorky konzistentne monitorovali vyšší počet študentov častejšie v móde ON ako v móde IN; distribúcia pohľadu v móde ON bola viac rovnomerná. Mód IN sa z väčšej časti vyznačoval sústredeným pohľadom na konkrétneho študenta, s ktorým učiteľ v danej chvíli interagoval. Prezentované poznatky otvárajú diskusiu o obecnom chápaní profesijného videnia v rôznych kontextoch a tiež čiastočne spochybňujú mieru, do akej by mal byť súčasný výskum rozširovaný v porovnaní s viac tradičnými metódami. Tretia štúdia je zameraná na distribúciu pozornosti učiteľov v priestore a čase, t. j. počet a trvanie pohľadov učiteľov sa zaznamenávali a analyzovali s ohľadom na špecifické faktory ako pohlavie študentov, ich prospech alebo usadenie v triede. Výsledky jasne ukázali, že pohľady učiteľov boli rozložené nerovnomerne v priestore aj v čase; pozorovali sme, že učitelia sa pozerali na najsledovanejších študentov 3 až 8-krát častejšie ako na ich menej sledovaných rovesníkov. Študenti sediaci v prvom rade a v strednej časti triedy obdržali výrazne viac pohľadov učiteľov ako tí, ktorí sedeli na miestach mimo túto oblasť. Všetci traja učitelia tiež výrazne častejšie sledovali študentov bez vzájomného očného kontaktu alebo sledovali ich pracovné materiály. Okrem toho sme na základe analýzy výsledkov zistili, že rozloženie pohľadov všetkých troch učiteľov sa v jednotlivých lekciách výrazn

e líši, z čoho vyplýva otvorenie diskusie nad ďalšími trendami relevantných v oblasti vzdelávania. Tieto tri hlavné štúdie sú napokon doplnené o záverečnú kapitolu navrhujúcu konkrétne metodologické smery, postupy a základy pre nasledujúci výskum. Limitom a praktickým návrhom k nasledujúcemu výskumu pomocou technológie eye tracking, a hlavne mobilným eye tracking zariadeniam, sa podrobne venuje diskusná časť práce. Poskytnuté zistenia a závery z tejto práce môžu byť dôležité pre správne pochopenie ekologicky validného správania učiteľov počas reálnej výuky v prostredí školskej triedy. Tiež ale zdôrazňujú relevantnosť vhodných metód a experimentálneho dizajnu v budúcich výskumoch školskej triedy, kde technológia eye tracking má zaiste široký potenciál.

Abstract:

This doctoral dissertation explores the topic of eye-tracking technology use in the behavioural research of teaching activity in the real classroom environment, specifically the visual attention dedicated to individual students during the act of teaching. The dissertation is intended to achieve two key goals: to test and demonstrate the suitability of eye-tracking technology for educational research and to provide empirical evidence about a relevant educational topic acquired with the use of this technology, thereby enabling new perspectives in the field. Both goals are directly emphasised in the structure of this work. The core of this dissertation consists of three individual studies (one review and two empirical studies) exploring education phenomena that occur during the real process of teaching. The studies were conducted using state-of-the-art mobile eye-tracking technology that enabled the recording of a considerable amount of original behavioural data from real teaching activity in a Czech school classroom. The methodology used and the findings presented in the framework of this dissertation not only critically discuss and revise existing research approaches, but also highlight the potential and importance of modern technologies for empirical research in the field of education. Specifically, the first review study summarised and discussed the possibilities of eye-tracking technology in the field of education. The theoretical background and a literature review of eye-tracking research in education were presented with an emphasis on real school classrooms. The second study was targeted to explore teacher gaze during and after the act of teaching. Eye-tracking glasses were used to record three teachers’ gazes during real teaching (IN mode), and the teachers’ gazes were then compared to the traditional video-based attention distribution measures captured by remote eye-tracking (ON mode) after teaching. A comparison between IN and ON conditions in terms of dwell time on specific students was made using timeline comparison and correlation methods. The findings suggested that the greatest differences in attention given to individual students occurred when a student who was interacted with during the situation was missing from view in the video recording. Even though individual differences were present in the patterns of gaze in both IN and ON modes, all three teachers in our research sample consistently monitored a higher number of students more often in the ON mode than in the IN mode; the gaze distribution was rather equal for all students in the ON mode. Complementarily, the IN mode was mostly characterised by a focused gaze on a specific student that the teacher interacted with in the moment, with few side glances. The presented evidence provokes discussion about the general understanding of professional vision in different contexts and questions the specific extent to which the current research should expand its outlook compared to traditional methods. The third study principally investigated teachers’ attention distribution over space and time, i.e., the number and duration of teachers’ gazes were recorded and analysed with respect to specific factors of students’ gender, achievement, or position in the classroom. The results clearly demonstrated that the teachers’ gazes were distributed unevenly across both space and time; we observed that teachers looked at the most watched students 3 to 8 times more often than at their less attended peers. Students sitting in the first row and in the middle section of the classroom received significantly more teachers’ gazes than those sitting elsewhere. Also, all three teachers made significantly more single gaze visits, looking at the students without mutual eye contact, than mutual gazes or gazes at student material. and several more trends relevant for the field of education were highlighted and discussed. These three core studies are further complemented with a closing chapter suggesting methodological directions, practices, and bases for future research. The limitations and practical suggestions for follow-up research with mobile eye-tracking technology are extensively covered in the discussion part of this work. Altogether, the provided findings may be important for a proper understanding of the ecologically valid behaviour of teachers performed in the real act of teaching in the context of a classroom, but they also emphasise the relevance of appropriate methods and experimental design in future classroom studies where eye-tracking technologies have extensive potential.
