The response of the Dreyfus Affair in the Czech press 1898-1899

Abstract:

Tato rigorózní práce si klade za primární cíl zmapovat průběh Dreyfusovy aféry na stránkách českého tisku od ledna 1898 do září 1899. Sledované období zachycuje několik klíčových událostí, které pronikly na veřejnost a výrazně ovlivnily historii této aféry: proces s Esterházym, proces se Zolou, sebevražda plukovníka Henryho, obnovený proces s Dreyfusem. V září 1899 pak došlo v Rakousko-Uhersku k soudnímu procesu s domnělým vrahem Leopoldem Hilsnerem. Oba protagonisty, Dreyfuse a Hilsnera, spojuje židovský původ. Na tomto základě došlo k sérii zmanipulovaných soudních procesů, ve kterých se signifikantně odráží vzrůst antisemitských nálad v tehdejší Evropě. Kromě hlavní kapitoly, jež představuje názory téměř dvaceti českých periodik na dané téma, rigorózní práce předkládá politicko-sociální nástin tehdejšího dění ve Francii a v českých zemích.

Abstract:

The primary aim of the thesis is to map out the course of the Dreyfus affair in the Czech press from January 1898 to September 1899. The period under observation captures several key events that leaked to the public and significantly influenced the history of this affair: the process of Esterházy, the process of Zola, the suicide of Colonel Henry, the renewed process of Dreyfus. In September 1899, the trial of an alleged murderer Leopold Hilsner took place in Austria-Hungary. Both the protagonists, Dreyfus and Hilsner, are of the Jewish origin. This formed the basis for a series of manipulated judicial process which significantly mirrored the increase in anti-Semitic sentiment in Europe at that time. Besides the main charter which represents the views of nearly twenty Czech periodicals on the subject, this thesis presents the politico-social outline of the then events in France and the Czech lands.
