Clothing and textiles in women's literature in the Heian period

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na popis způsobu odívání v období Heian v Japonsku a na komparaci několika děl dvorních dam tohoto období z hlediska oděvů a textilií. V první části se práce zaměřuje na historický kontext. Nejdříve je věnován prostor stručnému přehledu politického vývoje. Dále se zmiňuje vývoj písma a vliv tohoto procesu na literární tvorbu. Nakonec je definována literatura období Heian. Druhá část je věnována samotným oděvům a textiliím dané doby, historicko-ekonomické situaci a jejímu vlivu na život společnosti, a tím i mj. na import a výrobu látek a styl oblékání. Vzhled hrál důležitou roli mezi tehdejším lidem, proto je věnován prostor i estetice a významu barev. Jsou popsány nejčastěji užívané materiály a typy tkanin a dále samotné oděvy oblékané napříč sociálními vrstvami heianské společnosti. Ve třetí části mají své místo jednotlivé autorky. Ke každé je přiřazen její stručný životopis a rozbor díla. Rozbor poukazuje na samotný přístup autora k danému tématu – jak podrobně se popisu oděvů věnuje a jak významnou roli tomuto přikládá. Cílem této práce je rozebrat pojetí tématu jednotlivými autorkami a celkové srovnání přístupu všech autorek, a úvaha, zda je z tohoto možné vyvodit, jaký vliv na tehdejší společnost mělo odívání a jak významnou úlohu v životě lidí hrálo.

Abstract:

This Bachelor's thesis is focused on description of the way of clothing in Heian period in Japan and on the comparison of a few works of ladies-in-waiting from this period, from the point of view of dresses and textiles. First part of the thesis is focused on historical context. The beginning is devoted to a brief overview of political developement. Later, the development of writng and its influence on literary output is mentioned. At the end of the section, literature of Heian period is defined. The second part is devoted to dresses and textiles of the time, to historical and economic situation and its influence on the life of the society and therefore also on import and the way of clothing. Appearence played an important role among the people then, thus the space for esthetics and meaning of colors is also given. The mostly used materials, types of fabric and clothing weared by people through the social classes of Heian society are described. The third part belongs to authors. Brief biography and analysis of work is assigned to each one of them. Analysis also points out the approach of each author to the subject- how detailed is their description of clothing is and how important role they assigned to it. The aim of this work is to analyze approaches of individual authors to the subject and overall comparison of approaches of all of them. Also it is considered if it is possible to deduce influence of clothing and how important role it played in the life of people.
