Information overload in the IT work environment

Abstract:

V dnešní éře informační exploze čelí pracovníci ve všech odvětvích rostoucímu problému informačního přetížení. S nárůstem produkovaných a dostupných dat se exponenciální rychlostí zvyšuje i riziko zahlcení informacemi, z čehož vyplývá řada negativních následků, jako je snížení produktivity, pohody a kvality vykonávané práce. Tento fenomén nepřináší jen výzvy v oblasti rozhodování a soustředění, ale také se dotýká duševního zdraví pracovníků. Přestože máme neomezený přístup k informacím, efektivní zpracování a využití této neutuchající datové laviny se stává stále náročnějším úkolem. Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl prozkoumat a navrhnout účinná doporučení pro minimalizaci negativních dopadů informačního přetížení, zejména v kontextu IT pracovního prostředí. Skrze důkladnou rešerši existujících zdrojů a empirický výzkum provedený mezi pracovníky IT oddělení společnosti Škoda Auto a.s. budou identifikovány hlavní psychologické a fyzické dopady informačního přetížení a navržena účinná opatření pro jejich řešení. Pro ucelený pohled na problematiku je využit kvantitativní výzkum ve formě dotazníkového šetření a kvalitativní přístup prostřednictvím rozhovoru s vedoucím pracovníkem. IT pracovní prostředí je specificky náchylné k informačnímu přetížení kvůli velkému množství informačních toků, které musí jeho pracovníci zpracovávat. Omezení práce zahrnují počet respondentů a časový rámec pro výzkum. Tato práce aspiruje na to, aby poskytla praktická doporučení pro organizace, která by jim pomohla zmírnit negativní dopady informačního přetížení na jejich pracovníky a zároveň zlepšila pracovní prostředí a produktivitu. Výsledky slouží jak pro vedoucí pracovníky a personální oddělení při formulaci efektivních strategií ke zlepšení informačního zdraví organizace, i jednotlivým pracovníkům hledajícím cesty, jak lépe zvládat svou informační zátěž. Dále může tato práce sloužit jako východisko pro budoucí výzkum v této dynamicky se vyvíjející oblasti.

Abstract:

In today's era of information explosion, staff in all sectors face the growing problem of information overload. As the amount of data produced and available increases at an exponential rate, the risk of information overload increases, with a number of negative consequences such as reduced productivity, well-being and quality of work. This phenomenon not only poses challenges in terms of decision-making and concentration, but also affects the mental health of workers. Although we have unlimited access to information, effectively processing and utilising this relentless avalanche of data is becoming an increasingly challenging task. This thesis aims to explore and propose effective recommendations to minimize the negative impacts of information overload, especially in the context of IT work environments. Through a thorough search of existing sources and empirical research conducted among the staff of the IT department at Škoda Auto a.s., the main psychological and physical impacts of information overload will be identified and effective measures for addressing them will be proposed. It uses quantitative research in the form of a questionnaire survey and a qualitative approach through an interview with a senior manager to provide a comprehensive view of the work. The IT work environment is specifically prone to information overload due to the large amount of information flows that its workers must process. Limitations of the thesis include the number of respondents and the time frame for the research. This paper aspires to provide practical recommendations for organizations to help them mitigate the negative effects of information overload on their workforce while improving the work environment and productivity. The results are useful both for managers and HR departments in formulating effective strategies to improve the information health of their organizations, and for individual workers seeking ways to better manage their information burdens. Further, this work can serve as a starting point for future research in this dynamic area.
