VisualUV: Blender add-on for UV Mapping workflow

Abstract:

Blender se každým rokem těší stále větší popularitě, stále mu však chybí některá funkcionalita, kterou většina známých aplikací na 3D modelování běžně nabízí. Jedno z odvětvích, ve kterých Blender zaostává za konkurencí, je vizualizace chyb při UV mappingu. Hlavním výsledkem této práce je Blender add-on VisualUV na vizualizaci chyb v UV mapách. Tato práce představí čtenářům nejčastější problémy při UV mappingu, prozkoumá vizualizační metody na detekci chyb v UV mapách známých aplikací na 3D modelování, a dále tyto metody porovná s metodami, které jsou dostupné v současné verzi Blenderu. Na základě těchto pozorování byl navržen add-on VisualUV, který implementuje sadu vizualizačních nástrojů, které budou přínosem pro UV mapping v Blenderu. Čtenářům bude představeno Blender Python API, jehož využití bude demonstrováno v implementaci navrženého add-onu. VisualUV byl odzkoušen v malém testu s osmi účastníky. Výsledky testu ukazují, že i přes své limitace je cenným přínosem pro uživatele Blenderu. Po skončení testování byl add-on zpřístupněn veřejnosti.

Abstract:

Blender grows its user base every year, but it still lacks some features that industry-standard applications for 3D modeling have had for a long time. One of the fields where Blender falls behind the competition is the visualization of UV mapping errors. The primary outcome of this thesis is the VisualUV add-on for visualizing UV mapping errors in Blender. This thesis introduces readers to the most common issues during UV mapping and surveys 3D modeling applications for methods to visualize the resulting errors. These methods are compared with methods available in the current version of Blender. Based on these observations, a Blender add-on called VisualUV was designed that implements a set of visualization overlays that would benefit the UV mapping workflow in Blender. Readers are introduced to the basics of Blender’s Python API, and the thesis demonstrates its use in implementing the previously designed overlays. The add-on was subjected to a user test with eight participants. Despite its limitations, the results indicate it is a valuable tool for Blender users. After the testing ended, VisualUV was released to the general public.
