"A Piece of the Czech History is Gone..." Funeral and Commemorative Rites Following Deaths of the Founders of the Czech Policy

Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá úmrtím zakladatelů české politiky na přelomu 19. a 20. století. Pojednává o tom, jak česká společnost kolem roku 1900 tyto politiky vnímala, jak byla hodnocena doba počátků české politiky a co pro společnost odchod zakladatelů české politiky znamenal. Největší pozornost je věnována úmrtí Julia Grégra, Františka Ladislava Riegra a Eduarda Grégra. V práci je popsána podoba pohřbů těchto politiků a okolnosti, které jejich organizaci a průběh ovlivnily, například dřívější tradice či aktuální politická situace. Poslední část práce je zaměřena na důvody, proč si česká společnost přála uchovat tyto politiky v paměti národa a jakými způsoby si je připomínala.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the death of founders of the Czech policy at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The first part describes how the Czech society around 1900 percieved these politics, how the beginning of the Czech policy was evaluated and what the significance of the death of these last founders of the Czech policy for the then Czech society was. The major attention is focused on the death of Julius Grégr, František Ladislav Rieger and Eduard Grégr. The study describes funeral rites a circumstances which affected organization of the funerals of these three men, for example former traditions or then political situation. The last part of the thesis deals with reasons why it was important for the Czech society to commemorate the founders of the Czech policy and describes various ways of this commemoration.
