Comparison of the Proportions of Hand Bones with the Golden Ratio

Abstract:

V této práci jsem se zabývala vztahem mezi rozměry kostí ruky a matematickými principy zlatého řezu a Fibonacciho posloupnosti. Zlatý řez je ideální poměr, ve kterém platí, že poměr delší části úsečky ku kratší části se rovná poměru celé úsečky ku její delší části, zároveň se tyto poměry rovnají číslu ϕ. Fibonacciho posloupnost je řada čísel, ve které platí, že každý člen posloupnosti lze vyjádřit součtem dvou předcházejících členů. Teoreticky by rozměry kostí článků prstů a kostí záprstních (metacarpi) mohly odpovídat těmto matematickým zákonitostem. Cílem práce bylo tyto dva matematické jevy porovnat s údaji o rozměrech kostí ruky z databáze poskytnuté vedoucím práce, konkrétně se jedná o soubor měření rukou náhodně vybraných dvaceti jedinců z Vratislavské longitudinální studie dvojčat. Každý paprsek jsem zkoumala zvlášť a hledala jsem v něm různé poměry, které by mohly odpovídat zlatému řezu a Fibonacciho posloupnosti. Co se týče zlatého řezu, ani v jednom případě jsem nenalezla statistickou rovnost mezi poměry, která by daný jev potvrzovala. Fibonacciho posloupnost naznačovalo hned několik poměrů, ale pouze u dívek u druhého paprsku při zahrnutí pouze článků prstů se jednalo o statistickou shodu.

Abstract:

In this thesis I focused on a relationship between proportions of hand bones and the mathematic principles of the golden ratio and the Fibonacci sequence. The golden ratio is an ideal ratio where the ratio of the longer part of a line to the smaller part and ratio of the whole line to the larger part are equal, and at the same time equal the number ϕ. The Fibonacci sequence is a sequence of numbers, where every number equals the sum of the two preceding numbers. Theoretically, the dimensions of phalangeal and metacarpal bones might be associated to these mathematical principles. The purpose of this thesis was to compare those mathematical phenomena to the data of hand bones dimensions from a database were provided by the supervisor of this thesis. To be specific, it is a set of hand measurements of twenty randomly picked individuals from the Wrocław longitudinal twin study. Each finger was analyzed individually and searched for various ratios that might correspond to the golden ratio and Fibonacci sequence. When it comes to the golden ratio, I didn’t find any statistical equality between ratios that would confirm the hypothesis. Regarding the Fibonacci sequence, several ratios demonstrated an association, but only in the phalanges on girls‘ second finger, a statistically significant agreement was observed.
