Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá pojetím Amerického snu v padesátých letech minulého století a jeho možných dopadech na duševní zdraví Holdena Caulfielda a Esther Greenwoodové – hlavních postav románů Kdo chytá v žitě a Pod skleněným zvonem. Hlavním cílem je jednak nalézt spojitost mezi depresí (a následným nervovým zhroucením) těchto postav a společenskými nátlaky dané éry, a jednak stanovit příčiny vycházející z jejich osobní historie. Toho je docíleno definováním charakterističností dané doby, bližší diagnózou duševních problémů těchto postav, rozborem jejich rodinného zázemí a určením hlavních traumatických událostí, kterými si prošly. Závěrem je vyhodnocení vztahů mezi všemi možnými příčinami jejich deprese a určení té primární.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the notion of the American dream in the 1950s and the impact it may have on the mental health of Holden Caulfield and Esther Greenwood – the protagonists of The Catcher in the Rye and The Bell Jar, respectively. The primary aim is to find the links between the said characters’ depression (and subsequent mental breakdown) and the social pressures of the era, in which both of the novels are set, while also determining additional root causes of their mental health problems. This is achieved by defining the era’s distinctive features, diagnosing the characters’ possible illnesses in more detail, analyzing their family background and indicating all the traumatic events they experience throughout (or prior to) the plot of their respective novel. The thesis is concluded by assessing the relationship between all the potential causes of the characters’ depression while also determining the principal one.
