Al-Farida al-Gha’iba (‘Neglected obligation’): Critical analysis, inspirational sources and socio-political context

Abstract:

Hlavním předmětem práce je spis s názvem al-Farīda al-Ghā’iba (‘Opomíjená povinnost‘). Tento spis zachycuje názory skupiny militantních aktivistů s názvem Společenství džihádu (arab. Džamā‘at al-džihād), která je zodpovědná za atentát na egyptského prezidenta Anwāra Sādāta v roce 1981. Autor textu Muhammad ‘Abd as-Salām Farādž (z. 1982) se ve spisu pokouší legitimizovat názory a jednání skupiny, ke které patřil pomocí citací z Koránu a sunny (tradice), stejně jako ze spisů významných náboženských autorit islámské historie. Z náboženských autorit Farādž nejvíce cituje spisy středověkého učence Ahmada Ibn Tajmījji (z. 1328), konkrétně fatwy (nábožensko-právní vyjádření k určité problematice), které Ibn Tajmījja vypracoval v reakci na mongolské invaze z východu. Farādž se pak snaží tyto spisy vztáhnout k situaci v Egyptě druhé poloviny 20. století. Jedním z cílů práce je ukázat, jakým způsobem Farādž s těmito spisy pracuje. Farādž, bývalý člen Muslimského bratrstva (arab. al-Ichwān al-Muslimūn), vyrůstal ve velice turbulentní době po revoluci z roku 1952, tato doba nutně jeho názory usměrňovala. K analýze názorů zachycených ve spisu bude tedy nezbytné nastínit socio-politický kontext této doby s důrazem na Muslimské bratrstvo a organizace, které na něj navazovaly. V tomto ohledu jsou velice užitečné ty části Farādžova spisu, ve kterých se snaží vést polemiku s různými sociálními skupinami egyptské společnosti jeho doby a snaží se ukázat, že jeho přístup je ten jediný správný. Tyto části tak pomáhají dokreslovat dobový kontext z perspektivy samotných členů Společenství džihádu. Na základě vývoje vybraných konceptů se práce snaží ukázat Farādžův spis a názory v něm zachycené, jako důležitý mezistupeň mezi ideologií Muslimského bratrstva ovlivněnou Sajjīdem Qutbem (z. 1966) a skupinami, které po vzoru Společenství džihádu dávají zásadní důraz na ustanovení islámského státu prostřednictvím militantní činnosti.

Abstract:

The main subject of this paper is a text called al-Farīda al-Ghā’iba (‘Neglected Duty‘). This text captures views of a group of militant activists who called themselves Jihad Organization (arab. Džamā‘at al-džihād), they are responsible for the assassination of Egyptian president Anwār Sādāt in 1981. Author of the text Muhammad ‘Abd as-Salām Farāj (d. 1982) is attempting to legitimize the views and actions of the group which he belonged to using citations from the Koran and sunna (tradition) as well as using the texts of influential religious authorities from Islamic history. Regarding the religious authorities, Farāj in most cases cites texts of medieval scholar Ahmad Ibn Taymīyya (d. 1328), specifically fatwas (religious-judiciary decision regarding specific issues) which Ibn Taymīyya wrote in reaction to Mongol invasions from the east. Farāj is then trying to relate these texts to the situation in Egypt during the second half of 20th century. One of the objectives of this paper is to show how Farāj uses these texts. Farāj, former member of Muslim Brotherhood (arab. al-Ichwān al-Muslimūn) grew up in a very turbulent time following the revolution of 1952. This period of time necessarily influenced his views. For analysis of the views captured in his text it is necessary to outline the socio-political context of this time with emphasis on Muslim Brotherhood and organizations that followed after it. Very useful in this regard are the parts of Farāj’s text in which he tries to argue with different social groups in Egypt of his time and tries to show that his view is the only correct one. These parts of the text help to picture the context of his time from the perspective of Jihad Organization members themselves. Based on the development of chosen concepts, the paper is attempting to show Farāj’s text and views captured in it, as an important intermediate state between the ideology of Muslim Brotherhood influenced by Sajjīd Qutb (d. 1966) and groups which follow the model of Jihad Organization in giving major emphasis on the establishment of an Islamic state through militant actions.
