Korais and Gazis: Their Activities on the Background of the Journal Logios Ermis

Abstract:

V předkládané disertaci jsme se pokusili popsat a porovnat nepopiratelný přínos dvou řeckých osvícenských intelektuálů na pozadí předrevolučního dění v Řecku i mimo něj. Obě osobnosti se na poli řecké kultury velmi zasloužily o vydávání periodik, publikování různě zaměřených odborných knih a zakládání novodobých škol a knihoven. Přesto se doposud nikdo nepokusil o komparaci jejich životního poslání ani pozdějšího odkazu. Navzdory sporům, které Koraisovu i Gazisovu pomyslnou pouť za svobodné Řecko provázely, lze považovat spoustu jejich životních kroků za téměř identických. Pokud bychom chtěli shrnout oblasti jejich společného zájmu, bez váhání bychom mohli uvést žurnalistiku, lexikografii, geografii či pedagogiku. Vstoupí-li ovšem do hry některá ryze individuální, typem osobnosti daná omezení, najdeme na jejich cestě životem také spoustu odlišností a překážek. Oba disponovali cennými kontakty s Evropou, nicméně Koraisovy vztahy s dalšími osvícenci byly často složité, v jiných případech brzy ochladly, za což pravděpodobně mohla jeho břitká kritika či odvážné názory na politiku a církev. Gazise politické dění ani církevní záležitosti příliš nezajímaly, a to ani přesto, že byl sám aktivním duchovním. Fascinován byl spíše medicínou, kterou měl paradoxně vystudovanou zase Korais a jejíž mnohé poznatky Gazis do řeckého prostředí (ale i jinam) zprostředkoval. Co se týče oné kritičnosti, Gazis se v tomto ohledu ukázal jako poněkud praktičtější, když na místo poukazování na jazykové nedostatky druhých sám sepsal slovník (ač s chybami) a vydal řadu školních příruček. Důvody, pro které je Korais v porovnání se svými souputníky (i přes neucelenost svých idejí a dochovaného opusu) dodnes téměř zbožšťován, patrně tkví v jeho teoreticky velmi obsáhlém rozpracování jazykové otázky, která je ve vědeckém prostředí poměrně dost reflektována. Koraisova osobnost, dílo a dílčí ideje nejen o jazyce, ale také o politice či náboženství jej po zásluze učinily jakýmsi pomyslným vůdcem novořeckého proudu osvícenství. Gazis, a v jiných kulturních odvětvích jistě mnozí další, by si však podobný post bezpochyby zasloužily také.

Abstract:

In this doctoral thesis, we tried to describe and compare the indisputable contribution of two Greek intellectuals of the Enlightenment in the background of the pre-revolutionary developments in Greece and in some other places close to the Greek cultural environment. Both of those personalities were in the field of the Greek culture greatly instrumental in issuing of the first periodicals, publishing of various specialized books and establishing modern schools and libraries. In spite of the disputes that accompany Korais and Gazis' imaginary journey to the independent Greece, many of their life steps can be considered almost identical. If we want to summarize the areas of their common interest, we could without hesitation mention journalism, lexicography, geography or pedagogy. However, if we consider some of their individual limits, we find on the way through their lives many differences and supposed obstacles. Both of them had valuable contacts with Europe, but Korais's relations with other enlighteners were often complicated, in many cases they soon cooled down, probably for his blatant criticism or courageous views on the politics and the Church. Gazis was not so much interested in political or ecclesiastical affairs, even though he was an active cleric himself. He was rather fascinated by the medicine, which was paradoxically Korais's discipline. Gazis mediated many medical findings to the Greek language and to the other language environments. Regarding to that criticism, Gazis proved to be somewhat more practical in this regard, when he, instead of pointing to the language flaws of others, released a glossary (though with mistakes) and he published a number of school manuals. The reasons for which Korais, compared to his companions, has been to this day so idealized, lie despite the unceasingness of his ideas and the preserved opus presumably in his theoretically very extensive elaborating of the language question that is in the scientific environment relatively well reflected. Korais's personality, work, and partial ideas not only about language, but also about politics or religion (which were unfortunately beyond the scope of this dissertation), made him an honorable leader of the Modern Greek Enlightenment. Gazis, and certainly many others from the different cultural spheres, would have undoubtedly deserved the similar post, too.
