Spatial Perception- Egocentric and Allocentric Reference Frames

Abstract:

Main focus of this work is on contextual variables, that may influence individual reference frames proclivity in spatial perception. Two main reference frames are distinguished: egocentric reference frame and allocentric reference frame. Method of spatial perception examination called tunnel task is used. Tunnel task allows distinguishing between allocentric and egocentric reference frames. Paper focuses on two contextual variables: motion direction and placement of the beginning of the tunnel in sensory horizon. Four groups of tunnels were created: tunnels with motion direction forward and the beginning of the tunnel inside or outside sensory horizon and tunnels with motion direction backward and the beginning of the tunnel inside or outside sensory horizon. Tunnels with two different lengths of ending segment were created, so that all the conditions were met for both reference frames. 74 respondents participated in experiment that contains 144 tunnels and is based online. Results show, that motion direction is in relationship with individual reference frame proclivity. Most of the respondents preferred egocentric reference frame when the motion direction was backward. Results also suggest that length of the ending segment of tunnels may have influence on reference frame choice. When tunnels were with long ending segment, most respondents used egocentric reference frame and when tunnels were with short ending segment, most respondents used allocentric reference frame.

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zaberá kontextovými premennými, ktoré môžu ovplyvňovať výber referenčného rámca pri priestorovom vnímaní. Rozlišuje dva hlavné referenčné rámce a to allocentrický a egocentrický. Používa metódu skúmania priestorovej percepcie tunnel task. Táto metóda dokáže rozlíšiť, či bol použitý egocentrický alebo allocentrický referenčný rámec. Zameriava sa na dve kontextové premenné a to smer pohybu a polohu tunela v senzorickom horizonte. Boli vytvorené 4 skupiny tunelov, tunely so smerom pohybu vpred a polohou začiatku tunela v respektíve mimo senzorického horizontu respondenta a tunely so smerom pohybu vzad a polohou začiatku tunela v respektíve mimo senzorického horizontu. Aby boli splnené všetky podmienky pre oba referenčné rámce, bolo nutné vytvoriť tunely s dvoma rozdielnymi dĺžkami koncových segmentov. 74 respondentov sa prostredníctvom internetu zúčastnilo experimentu, ktorý obsahoval 144 tunelov. Výsledky ukázali, že smer pohybu má vzťah k preferencii referenčného rámca. Veľká väčšina respondentov pri tuneloch so smerom pohybu dozadu preferovala egocentrický referenčný rámec. Výsledky ďalej naznačujú, že dĺžka koncového segmentu môže mať tiež vplyv na výber referenčného rámca. Pri tuneloch s dlhým koncovým segmentom respondenti preferovali egocentrický referenčný rámec, zatiaľ čo pre tunely s krátkym koncovým segmentom respondenti preferovali allocentrický referenčný rámec.
