Foreshadowing and Related Narrative Techniques in the Novels of Charles Dickens

Abstract:

Práce se zabývala předobrazem a souvisejícími narativními strategiemi ve čtrnácti vybraných románech Charlese Dickense. Počáteční fáze výzkumu byly věnovány pochopení konceptu foreshadowing, zkoumání psychologických teorií, které podporují foreshadowing, a také zkoumání obecných příkladů použití foreshadowingu, aby se ukázalo, že se jedná o techniku převládající v mnoha současných románech a nejen pouze v Dickensově práci. Studie přešla k zasazení výzkumu do rámce naratologie, zkoumání narativních teorií , jako jsou Barthesovy kardinální funkce, Greimasovy binární opozice, Genetteova prolepsie, Rimmon-Kenanův paradox opakování a Mieke Balův „ zrcadlový text“ a „vložený text“. Tyto teorie byly aplikovány na romány Charlese Dickense, zkoumající jeho použití předstihových strategií vzhledem k těmto teoretickým konceptům. Přístup k výzkumu zahrnoval použití systematického souboru bodů pro analýzu každého románu, a to zahrnuje analýzu názvů, první a poslední věty a použití strategií předvídání v textu. Tento přístup poskytuje konzistentní analýzu každého románu nezávisle, ale v obecném rámci práce. Předvídání hraje významnou roli v Dickensově spisovatelské strategii, protože umožňuje Dickensovi propojit různé dílčí zápletky do hlavního děje, rozvíjet správná očekávání, vytvářet napětí, vyvolávat patos, skrývat tajemství a vyvolávat intriky, což vede ke konfliktům a napětí, které čtenáře drží až do konce vyprávění. Studie Dickensova použití foreshadowingu od jeho rané kariéry až po pozdější díla poskytuje komplexní přehled technik foreshadowingu v průběhu celého života. Některé z předstihových strategií, které Dickens zahajuje v rané fázi kariéry, přenáší a rozšiřuje a rozvíjí v pozdějších románech. Tato studie vyvinula nové koncepty a způsoby, jak nahlížet na literaturu nejen jako na kus příběhu, ale spíše jako na umělecky tkanou zápletku s vědomým plánováním a rozvojem. Předvídání je tajemství spisovatele k ukrývání informací, čtenářovo tajemství k objevování těchto informací a nástroj literárního vědce k odhalování toho, jak se spisovatel i čtenář zabývají textem.

Abstract:

The thesis explored foreshadowing and related narrative strategies in fourteen selected novels of Charles Dickens. The initial stages of the research were devoted to understanding the concept of foreshadowing, exploring the psychological theories that support foreshadowing, as well as looking at general examples of the use of foreshadowing to demonstrate that this is a technique prevalent in many contemporary novels and not just a technique in only Dickens work. The study moved on to situate the research within the framework of narratology, examining narrative theories and theorists significant for the research, including scholars such as Barthes's cardinal functions, Greimas binary oppositions, Genette's prolepsis, Rimmon-Kenan's paradox of repetition, and Mieke Bal's “mirror-text” and “embedded text”. These theories have been applied to the novels of Charles Dickens, exploring his use of foreshadowing strategies given these theoretical concepts. The approach to the research involved applying a systematic set of points for analysing each novel, and this involves analysing the titles, first and last sentences and the in-text use of foreshadowing strategies. This approach provides a consistent analysis of each novel independently but within the general framework of the thesis. Foreshadowing plays a significant role in Dickens's writing strategy as it allows Dickens to link various subplots into the main plot, develop the right expectations, create suspense, elicit pathos, hide secrets, and invoke intrigue, resulting in conflict and suspense, which hold the reader until the end of the narrative. The study of Dickens's use of foreshadowing from his early career to later works provides a comprehensive overview of foreshadowing techniques over a lifetime. Some of the foreshadowing strategies that Dickens initiates in the early career stage, he carries forward and expands and develops in the later novels. This study has developed new concepts and ways of seeing literature not just as a piece of a story but rather as an artistically woven plot with conscious planning and development. Foreshadowing is the writer's secret to hiding information, the reader's secret to discovering this information, and the literary scholar's tool in discovering how both the writer and reader engage with the text.
