The Magic Flute as a border between the German singspiel genre and the Viennese popular theatre

Abstract:

Kouzelná flétna jako hraniční žánr mezi německým singspielem a vídeňským lidovým divadlem – anotace bakalářské práce Bakalářská práce je zaměřena na Kouzelnou flétnu Emanuela Schikanedera a Wolfganga Amadea Mozarta jako patrně nejvýznamnější dílo, vytvořené v hudebně-dramatickém žánru německého singspielu. Práce je koncipována do tří obsahových celků, v nichž postupně nabízí pohled na Kouzelnou flétnu jako takovou a nazírá ji pohledem kulturně-historických souvislostí jejího vzniku, pohledem dramatického děje, čelních postav i optikou problematiky kouzla, symbolu či ideové symboliky, jež jsou její nedílnou součástí. Vymezena je rovněž hudebně-dramatická forma německého singspielu s poukazem na jeho vídeňský typ, vycházející v době prvního uvedení Kouzelné flétny především z dobově oblíbeného žánru tzv. kouzelné hry. Druhá a třetí část práce zahrnuje srovnání Kouzelné flétny se singspielem Kámen mudrců aneb Kouzelný ostrov, s nímž pojí Kouzelnou flétnu společný literární zdroj, některé osobnosti autorů, využití žánru kouzelné hry, respektive divadelní scéna, na níž bylo toto dílo premiérově inscenováno a Diamant krále duchů rakouského dramatika, Ferdinanda Raimunda. Kouzelná flétna je zde podrobena komparaci s tímto dramatem, vytvořeným ve Vídni na počátku 19. století opět v žánru kouzelné hry. Srovnávací analýza obou děl má za cíl postihnout přesah námětu, poetiky, pojetí postav, dramatického děje i symbolického odkazu Kouzelné flétny do vývoje svébytného, kulturně-historického fenoménu vídeňského lidového divadla, nežli v něm začaly namísto kouzelných a magických námětů převládat spíše prvky kriticko-společenské.

Abstract:

Resume This Bachelor’s thesis is focused on The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Emanuel Schikaneder, which was created in 1791 for the stage of the Viennese suburban Theater auf der Wieden in the German Singspiel genre with many fairytale and magico- symbolic elements. In terms of the thesis, The Magic Flute is subjected to reflection of the dramatic action, the central characters, symbols or symbolism and their possible sources. The text also touches on the cultural phenomenon of Schikaneder’s troupe at Theater auf der Wieden with a mention of its artistic repertoire, the poetics of Singspiel productions and leading personalities from the ranks of authors and performers. At the end of the thesis, The Magic Flute is confronted with the themes, dramatic action, poetics, characters and symbolism of the Singspiel, The Philosopher´s Stone or The Enchanted Isle, and the drama by Ferdinand Raimund, The Diamond of the Spirit King. The Singspiel, The Philosopher´s Stone or The Enchanted Isle, was first performed a year before the premiere of The Magic Flute (1790) in Theater auf der Wieden and displays many similarities with this in the characters of the authors, performers, poetics, dramatic action and even source of themes. The part of the thesis devoted to the drama, The Diamond of the Spirit King, by Ferdinand Raimund, connects The Magic Flute with Viennese folk theatre at the beginning of the 19th century. By comparing the theme, poetics, characters and symbolism of Raimund’s text with The Magic Flute, it attempts to capture and interpret the similarities of both works, working with the theatrical form of Zauberspiel, which was very popular in Viennese folk theatre at the end of the 18th century and beginning of the 19th century.
