F. Ř. I. Eckstein's Fresco Painting in Castle Chapel in Kravaře

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce měla přiblížit fresku v zámecké kapli v Kravařích, která je součástí slezského díla brněnského barokního malíře F. Ř. I. Ecksteina. Freska vznikla pravděpodobně mezi lety 1727 – 1730 po završení přestavby zámku Janem Rudolfem, svobodným pánem z Eichendorffu. Kaple je zasvěcená archandělu Michaelovi a kromě freskového stropu je vyzdobena reliéfy s vyobrazením sv. Michaela s ďáblem a také oltářním obrazem Pád andělů (parafráze na Apokalyptickou ženu od Petera Paula Rubense). Freska na oválné kupoli stropu je rozdělena na tři části iluzivními římsami, přičemž ve spodním pásu jsou vyobrazeni evangelisté, čtyři církevní otcové a alegorie čtyř světadílů. Ve vnitřním pásu se nacházejí světci, obklopující výjev ve středu kupole – Nanebevzetí Panny Marie se svatou Trojicí. Malovaná kvadratura není příliš typická pro tohoto zastánce pozzovského ilusionismu, nicméně další srovnání vedou k Ecksteinovi jakožto autorovi. Je možné, že rozdílná koncepce byla způsobena záměrem sjednotit architekturu fresky s architekturou kaple. Ikonografický program fresky není znám, neboť se do dnešních dob nedochovaly žádné dokumenty. Tato práce se pokusila o interpretaci fresky na základě zobrazených figur s přihlédnutím k barokní zbožnosti a také k celkové výzdobě kaple. Pravděpodobně nejzajímavější hypotézou je, že freska měla symbolizovat Mariino vítězství a tím vytvořit protipól k ďáblu na reliéfech a oltářním obraze kaple.

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma work is to describe and analyse fresco painting in castle chapel in Kravaře that is considered to be a part of F. Ř. I. Eckstein’s Silesian work. The chapel ceiling was painted probably between 1727 and 1730, shortly after the castle has been rebuilt by Jan Rudolf Eichendorff. The chapel has been consecrated to saint Michael, the Archangel and besides the ceiling fresco it is decorated with an altar painting called the Fall of the angels (paraphrase of Ruben’s Woman of the Apocalypse) and three embossments depicting Archangel Michael and the devil. The main theme of the ceiling painting is the Assumption of Virgin Mary. Whole fresco is divided into central part containing the main theme and two surrounding oval rings separeted by illusory moulding. The outer ring shows figures of the evangelist, four fathers of the catholic church and allegories of four continents while the inner (upper) ring is filled by saints, surrounding the scene in the centre with Holy Virgin and Holy Trinity. The quadrature part of fresco is not very typical for a Moravian follower of Pozzo’s illusionism, but comparison with the other works leads to Eckstein. It might be explained by the author’s possible intention to integrate illusory architecture of painting with real architecture of the chapel. The iconographic conception is unknown, because no documents (like concetto) have been preserved to our time. This diploma work presents several possible interpretations of the fresco painting described above with regard to depicted figures, baroque devotion (regional type for Habsburg monarchy – pietas austriaca) and themes of other decorative objects placed in the chapel. Probably the most interesting hypothesis is based on the idea that Virgin Mary and rest of the fresco have been used as a counterpoint to the devil from the embossments and altar painting and represent triumph over him.
