Uptalk in varieties of English: British English and Australian English

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the topic of intonation. It examines and compares uptalk in southern British English and Australian English. This research aims to determine whether there is any specific pattern behind using uptalk and if it is affected by circumstances and emotions happening simultaneously in the videos. The aim is to select suitable YouTube videos of British and Australian vloggers with this specific feature. The sampled videos are analysed by using a software called Speech Analyzer and a Speech Act Theory. Based on the data of analysed intonation, we can ascertain in which situations uptalk is used the most commonly and whether there are any specific conditions within which pitch plays a unique role.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na téma intonace. Zkoumá a porovnává 'uptalk' v jižní britské angličtině a australské angličtině. Účelem tohoto výzkumu je zjistit, zda existuje nějaký specifický vzor za požitím stoupavé intonace a či je intonace ovlivněna okolnostmi a emocemi, které se dějí ve videích. Cílem je vybrat vhodná YouTube videa britských a australských vlogerů s touto specifickou intonací. Ukázková videa jsou analyzována pomocí softwaru Praat a na základě teorie řečových aktů. Na základě výsledků analyzované intonace můžeme zjistit, ve kterých situacích se stoupavá intonace používá nejčastěji, a zda existují specifické podmínky, v rámci kterých hraje vysoká intonace zvláštní roli.
