Iron ores from the Rudice-Seč locality

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je zaměřena na zhodnocení povahy železných rud z pískovny Rudice-Seč ve střední části Moravského krasu. Teoretická kapitola práce podává geologickou charakteristiku Moravského krasu se zaměřením na jeho střední část a rudické vrstvy. Popisuje výskyt a rozšíření železných rud v oblasti Moravského krasu včetně historie hutnění železa a jeho těžby. V rámci terénní etapy byl v bývalé pískovně Rudice-Seč uskutečněn odběr čtyř vzorků železných rud o maximální velikosti zhruba 8 cm, a dvou vzorků křemenného písku (z jejich nadloží a podloží). V rámci laboratorní etapy práce byl proveden makroskopický popis jednotlivých vzorků a pomocí stereomikroskopu pořízena jejich fotodokumentace. Studované vzorky železných rud mají oranžově červenou barvu s tmavě červenohnědým až černým 2-4 mm mocným páskem, ve kterém byly prostřednictvím EDX analýz zaznamenány nejvyšší obsahy železa. Z dalších minerálních součástek jsou značně rozšířena klastická zrna křemene. Jejich velikost se pohybuje od několika desetin milimetru až po 10 milimetrů. Rentgenovou difrakční práškovou analýzou (XRPD bylo ověřeno fázové složení vzorků. Jako hlavní minerál byl identifikován křemen a v případě „železných rud“ amorfní fáze tvořené oxidy a hydroxidy železa. Chemické složení odebraných vzorků bylo studováno prostřednictvím plošných a bodových energiově disperzních (EDX) analýz. Z hlediska chemického složení nejtmavší vrstvy zkoumaných vzorků je dominantním prvkem železo. Relativně vyšší jsou zde i obsahy hliníku, který s největší pravděpodobností souvisí s přítomností jílových minerálů. Rezavě zbarvená vrstva vzorku (pod vrstvou se zvýšeným obsahem železa) je tvořena především zrny křemene s menším obsahem železa (křemenný pískovec). Studium zrnitosti prokázalo, že nejhrubší klastický materiál se nachází zpravidla ve spodní části zkoumaného vzorku (rezavě zbarvená vrstva) a směrem do nadloží se zjemňuje, což naznačuje pozitivní gradaci. Dosažené výsledky práce jsou v práci diskutovány a srovnány s údaji získanými studiem analogických typů sedimentů jak z oblasti Moravského krasu, tak případně i z jiných lokalit v rámci České republiky.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis is focused on the evaluation of the nature of iron ores from the Rudice-Seč sand pit in the central part of the Moravian Karst. The theoretical chapter of the thesis presents the geological characteristics of the Moravian Karst with a focus on its middle part and the Rudice layers. It describes the occurrence and distribution of iron ores in the Moravian Karst region, including the history of iron compaction and its mining. As part of the field stage, four samples of iron ore with a maximum size of approximately 8 cm and two samples of quartz sand (from their overburden and subsoil) were collected in the former Rudice-Seč sand pit. As part of the laboratory stage of the work, a macroscopic description of individual samples was carried out and their photo documentation was taken using a stereomicroscope. The iron ore samples studied have an orange-red color with a dark red-brown to black 2-4 mm thick band in which the highest iron contents were recorded through EDX analyses. Among other mineral components, clastic quartz grains are widely distributed. Their size ranges from a few tenths of a millimeter to 10 millimeters. The phase composition of the samples was verified by X-ray powder diffraction analysis (XRPD). Quartz was identified as the main mineral, and in the case of "iron ores" amorphous phases formed by iron oxides and hydroxides. The chemical composition of the samples taken was studied by surface and point energy dispersive (EDX) analyses. From the point of view of the chemical composition of the darkest layer of the examined samples, iron is the dominant element. The aluminum content is also relatively higher here, which is most probably related to the presence of clay minerals. The rust-colored layer of the sample (below the layer with an increased iron content) is made up mainly of quartz grains with a smaller iron content (quartz sandstone). The grain size study showed that the coarsest clastic material is usually found in the lower part of the examined sample (rust-colored layer) and becomes finer towards the overburden, which indicates a positive gradation. The achieved results of the work are discussed in the work and compared with data obtained from the study of analogous types of sediments both from the Moravian Karst region and possibly from other localities within the Czech Republic.
