The metaphor in persuading

Abstract:

Předložená práce se v teoretické části zabývá poznatky o metafoře – dosud v české literatuře uceleně neprezentovanými – jako o prostředku myšlení z hlediska kognitivní a sociální psychologie, zejména z oblasti persuaze. Práce shrnuje modely fungování metafory jako persuazivního prostředku a jednotlivé typy metafor v čele s teorií konceptuálních metafor. V praktické části práce byl persuazivní efekt metafory na postoje experimentálně ověřován na tématu kamerového systému, dále byl zkoumán účinek explicitní a implicitní metafory a zejména dosud neprozkoumaná oblast – vztah účinků metafory a osobnostního rysu „need for cognition“ (NFC). Persuazivní efekt metafory se projevil pouze při přesvědčování k souhlasu s tématem, přičemž obecně byl postoj k tématu v tomto vzorku spíše nesouhlasný. Implicitní a explicitní metafora se projevily jako stejně účinné. Překvapivým zjištěním je, že vliv metafory a NFC se vylučuje. Výsledky naznačují, že NFC může „zabrzdit“ účinek metafory v těch položkách, které se zaměřují na kognitivní stránku postoje, nebo v těch, které se zaměřují na emoční stránku postoje a zároveň jsou prezentovány v termínech možných zisků ze situace (nikoliv ztrát).

Abstract:

The thesis in its theoretical part deals with the findings about metaphor – which haven’t been presented comprehensively in Czech literature until now – as about a thinking tool in terms of cognitive and social psychology, especially persuasion. The thesis summarizes models of functioning of metaphor as of a persuasive tool and different types of metaphor led by theory of conceptual metaphors. In the practical part, persuasive effect of metaphor on attitudes was experimentally examined through the topic of CCTV system, further was examined the effect of explicit and implicit metaphors and mainly and unexplored area – relation between the effects of metaphor and of the personal trait „need for cognition” (NFC). Persuasive effect of metaphor was observed only when persuading towards agreement with the topic, while general attitude of this sample was rather disagreeing. Implicit and explicit metaphors are shown to be equally effective. A surprising finding is that the effect of metaphor and NFC are excluded. The results suggest that NFC can „slow down“ the effect of metaphor in items focused either on cognitive aspect of attitude, or focused on emotional aspect of attitude and in the same time presented in terms of possible benefits from the situation (not losses).
