Indebtedness of Czech households during the economic cycles in the period 2005-2020

Abstract:

Diplomová práce analyzuje zadluženost českých domácností v průběhu hospodářských cyklů za období 2005–2020. Cílem práce je ověřit, zda se domácnosti v krizi zadlužovaly více a zda ve sledovaných letech bohatly rychleji, než chudly. Práce je zpracovaná formou literární rešerše, makroekonomické analýzy a dále také využívá metody popisné statistiky a srovnávání. Stěžejní část práce je věnována analýze obou stran bilance domácností a zahrnuje dvě krizová období (finanční krizi a covidovou pandemii). Na základě výše uvedených metod bylo zjištěno, že se české domácnosti ve sledovaných letech rychleji zadlužovaly, než bohatly. V případě spotřebních úvěrů jejich zadluženost v obou krizových letech klesala. V případě úvěrů na bydlení se zadluženost snižovala pouze v období finanční krize. Mezi rizika zadlužení patří především jeho rychlost, která může vést k předlužení sektoru domácností. To má negativní vliv nejen na jednotlivce, ale i instituce a respektive celý stát.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis analyses the indebtedness of Czech households during the economic cycles in the period 2005-2020. The aim of the thesis is to verify whether or not a household’s indebtedness was higher during a crisis and whether they became richer rather than poorer in the years under review. The thesis is based on literary research, macroeconomic analysis and uses the methods of descriptive statistics and comparison as well. The fundamental part consists of the analysis of both sides of households' balance sheets and covers two crisis periods (the financial crisis and the covid pandemic). Based on the above methods, it was found that Czech households' indebtedness increased rather than decreased in the years under review. In the case of consumer loans, their indebtedness declined in both years of crisis. In the case of housing loans, indebtedness decreased only during the financial crisis. The risks associated with indebtedness include the speed of its change – especially its increase, which can lead to over-indebtedness of the household sector. Over-indebtedness affects negatively not only individuals but also institutions and the whole state.
