Human and God in the Aztec Religion: A Case of the Toxcatl Festival

Abstract:

The thesis Human and God in the Aztec Religion: A Case of the Toxcatl Festival deals with the topic of the relationship between humans and gods in the pre-Columbian Nahua perception. There are two main problems I concern in this large theme. The first one is the approach to the term and the conception of teotl where I demonstrate problematic moments of the conventional translation of this Nahua term as “god“. The second one is the definition of “deities” as an ethic category applied to alien cultures in the field of scientific study of religions. The Toxcatl Festival as the most distinctive example of meeting of humans and gods in the Nahua world serves me as a referential frame in which I demonstrate my findings. I devote a part of the text to the detailed analysis of dealings with the term teotl in Nahuatl written texts and theirs translations. In this way I expose a pattern in the intercultural translation when emic and ethic constructs are mixed up non-critically. I come to a conclusion that the term teotl is better translated as “the noble one” which is more suitable to the Nahua comprehension of entities we call “gods”. These “noble ones” are an integral part of the Nahua social hierarchy and their “distinction” from humans is not set by their ontological essence but by the quantitative differentiation based on the quality of their inner energy (tonalli). With the reference to modern theories of religions based in the cognitive and social sciences I argue about the convenience of application of the term “god” to alien cultures and I come to the conclusion that the utilization of the term “intentional agent” for describing “gods” would be more neutral and by that more proper, whereas in reviewing the “supernatural” of these agents we always deal with the value constructed by us (Europeans).

Práca Človek a boh v aztéckom náboženstve: Slávnosť Toxcatl sa zaoberá problematikou vzťahu ľudí a bohov v percepcii predkolumbovských Nahuov. V tejto obšírnej téme si všímam dve problematiky. V prvom rade je to pojatie pojmu a konceptu teotl, kedy ukazujem problematiku konvenčného prekladu tohto nahuaského pojmu ako ,,boh“. V druhom rade potom vymedzenie religionistického konceptu ,,bohov“ ako etickej kategórie aplikovanej na cudzie kultúry. Slávnosť Toxcatl, ako najvýraznejší príklad stretu ľudí a bohov v rámci nahuaského sveta, mi slúži ako referenčný rámec, na ktorom demonštrujem svoje zistenia. Časť textu venujem podrobnému rozboru zaobchádzania s pojmom teotl v nahuasky písaných textoch a ich prekladoch. Odhaľujem tak určitý vzorec v kultúrnom preklade, kedy dochádza k nekritickému prekrytiu etických a emických pojmov. Dochádzam k záveru, že pojem teotl je vhodnejšie prekladať ako ,,ten, ktorý je vznešený“, čo lepšie odpovedá nahuaskému chápaniu bytostí nami označovaných ako ,,bohovia“. Títo ,,vznešení“ tvoria integrálnu súčasť nahuaskej spoločenskej hierarchie a ich ,,odlišnosť“ od ľudí nie je daná ontologickou podstatou ale kvantitatívnym rozlíšením daným hodnotou vnútornej energie (tonalli). S odkazom na súčasné religionistické teórie, ukotvené predovšetkým v kognitívnych a sociálnych vedách, ďalej polemizujem o vhodnoti aplikovania pojmu ,,boh“ na cudzie kultúry, a dochádzam k záveru, že neutrálnejšie, a tým pádom vhodnejšie, je používanie pojmu ,,intencionálny aktér“ k popisu ,,bohov“, pričom v posudzovaní ,,nadprirodzenosti“ takýchto aktérov sa jedná vždy o nami (Európanmi) konštruovanú veličinu.
