The relationship among the personality dimensions of TCI-R, alexithymia, depression and anxiety in adolescents

Abstract:

The thesis deals with relationship among the personality dimensions of Cloninger’s Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI-R), alexithymia (measured by Toronto Alexithymia Scale – TAS-20), depression (measured by Beck Depression Inventory – BDI-II) and anxiety (measured by Self-Rating Anxiety Scale – SAS). The aim of this research study is to investigate these relationships in Czech 18-year-old adolescent sample (N = 252), the participants in longitudinal study ELSPAC (European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood). In terms of gender differences, girls scored higher in Reward Dependence, Novelty Seeking and Harm Avoidance, as well as on the anxiety scale (SAS), whereas there were no significant differences in neither of the other personality dimensions nor alexithymia and depression scale. Furthermore, we found positive correlations between Harm Avoidance and alexithymia (r = 0,303, p < 0,01), depression (r = 0,465, p < 0,01) and anxiety (r = 0,447, p < 0,01). On the contrary, there were negative correlations between Self-Directedness and alexithymia (r = -0,399, p < 0,01), depression (r = -0,467, p < 0,01) and anxiety (r = -0,406, p < 0,01). Finally, a typology based on cluster analysis of Cloninger’s personality dimensions was introduced and particular types were compared in terms of their alexithymia, depression and anxiety.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá posúdením vzťahov medzi osobnostnými dimenziami Cloningerovho dotazníka TCI-R, alexithymie (zisťovanej pomocou Torontskej škály alexithymie – TAS-20), depresie (zisťovanej pomocou Beckovej škály depresie – BDI-II) a úzkosti (zisťovanej pomocou Zungovej sebaposudzujúcej škály úzkosti – SAS). Cieľom výskumu bolo odhaliť tieto súvislosti u českej vzorky osemnásťročných adolescentov (N = 252), ktorá pozostávala z participantov longitudinálnej štúdie ELSPAC (Európska longitudinálna štúdia tehotenstva a detstva). Čo sa týka gendrových rozdielov, dievčatá dosahovali vyšších hodnôt v dimenziách závislosť na odmene, vyhľadávanie nového a vyhýbanie sa poškodeniu a rovnako mali vyššie skóre na škále zisťujúcej úzkosť. V ostatných osobnostných dimenziách a v hodnotách alexithymie a depresie nebol zistený štatisticky významný rozdiel medzi dievčatami a chlapcami. Následne sme zistili pozitívne korelácie medzi dimenziou vyhýbanie sa poškodeniu a alexithymiou (r = 0,303, p < 0,01), depresiou (r = 0,465, p < 0,01) a úzkosťou (r = 0,447, p < 0,01). Naopak negatívne s dimenziou sebariadenie korelovala alexithymia (r = -0,399, p < 0,01), depresia (r = -0,467, p < 0,01) and úzkosť (r = -0,406, p < 0,01). Nakoniec sme pomocou zhlukovej analýzy zostavili typológiu podľa Cloningerových osobnostných dimenzií a porovnali typy a ich mieru alexithymie, depresie a úzkosti.
