Freshwater communities in post-mining habitats

Abstract:

Předložená disertační práce přináší nové poznatky o sladkovodních ekosystémech na postindustriálních stanovištích a přispívá k lepšímu porozumění faktorů strukturujících společenstva vodních bezobratlých v těchto biotopech. První část práce pojednává o srovnání společenstev makrozoobentosu pěnovcových tůní a potoků samovolně vyvěrajících na výsypkách se společenstvy pěnovcových slatinišť v Západních Karpatech. Ačkoli druhově bohatý makrozoobentos postindustriálních stanovišť zahrnoval jak slatiništní specialisty, tak ohrožené druhy, nedosahoval druhové bohatosti pěnovcových slatinišť. Druhově nejpočetnější skupinou byli zástupci dvoukřídlého hmyzu (Diptera), jejichž druhové složení bylo mezi porovnávanými typy stanovišť nejpodobnější. Druhové složení ostatních skupin makrozoobentosu bylo však odlišné. K odlišnosti pravděpodobně přispělo extrémní abiotické prostředí postindustriálních stanovišť, popřípadě omezená kapacita šíření některých slatiništních specialistů. Postindustriální stanoviště byla hojně kolonizována vážkami (Odonata) a brouky (Coleoptera). Druhá část práce se zabývá srovnáním třech přístupů obnovy povrchu výsypek (tj. technickou rekultivací, spontánní sukcesí a (polo)spontánní sukcesí) souvisejících se vznikem tůní a nádrží. Druhová bohatost makrozoobentosu a zooplanktonu se mezi odlišně vzniklými biotopy významně nelišila. Počet druhů fytoplanktonu byl však v technicky vybudovaných nádržích významně vyšší než počet druhů v spontánně vzniklých tůních na nezrekultivovaném i zrekultivovaném povrchu výsypek. Významným faktorem ovlivňujícím sladkovodní společenstva tůní a nádrží výsypek bylo procentuální zastoupení litorální vegetace. Ačkoliv spontánně vzniklé tůně osídlilo více ohrožených druhů makrozoobentosu, technicky vybudované nádrže také adekvátně přispěly k ochranářské hodnotě postindustriálních stanovišť. Poslední část práce přináší prvotní popis popílkovišť se zaměřením na analýzu kovů v sedimentech. Zjištěné koncentrace kovů v některých studovaných popílkovištích převýšily stanovené národní limity pro koncentrace kovů v půdě a to v případě arsenu, mědi, vanadu a zinku. Limit stanovený Evropskou unií byl převýšen pouze u vanadu. Ačkoli některá popílkoviště mohou představovat z hlediska vysoké koncentrace toxických kovů riziko pro sladkovodní živočichy, ostatní zjištěné abiotické faktory popílkovišť (zejména stabilní pH a nízký obsah organické hmoty v sedimentech) pravděpodobně snižují jejich biologickou dostupnost.

Abstract:

The four studies included in this PhD thesis provide new insights into the aquatic post-mining habitats, and contribute to a better understanding of the drivers structuring freshwater communities in these areas. The first part of this thesis compares the macroinvertebrate assemblages of spontaneous calcareous seepages and brooks on spoil heaps with those found in natural calcareous fens and spring brooks in the Western Carpathians. Although a high species richness of macroinvertebrates was found at the post-mining sites, including both the spring fen specialist and threatened species, the natural sites hosted a higher number of species overall. Diptera was the most diverse taxa group, which also caused the greatest species similarity between the post-mining and natural sites. Nevertheless, the composition of other macroinvertebrate groups was more or less different, suggesting a possible role of environmental filtering and/or a limited dispersal of some spring specialists in post-mining brooks. In addition to Diptera, Odonata and Coleoptera might also recognize post-mining calcareous habitats as surrogate habitats for the natural calcareous fens and spring brooks. The second part of this thesis deals with suitable restoration management for post-mining ponds. While the species richness of macroinvertebrates and zooplankton did not differ significantly between the three types of ponds created with different restoration approaches (i.e. technical restoration, spontaneous succession, and semi-spontaneous succession), the species richness of phytoplankton was significantly higher in the technically established ponds. The most important driver in structuring the communities in the post-mining ponds was the proportion of littoral vegetation. Although the spontaneously created ponds harboured almost twice as many threatened macroinvertebrate species, technical restoration also contributed adequately to the conservation potential of post-mining habitats. The last part of the thesis contains a first description of the aquatic deposits of coal combustion wastes with a focus on the comparison of the environmental risk from elements in the sediments. The Czech national limits were exceeded for As, Cu, V, and Zn in some localities; only V exceeded the EU limits. For some of the elements studied, the high-risk indices were detected in several deposits; however, other environmental characteristics (e.g. stable pH, low organic matter in the sediments) probably reduced the bioavailability of these elements.
