Holocene mollusc succession of the White Carpathian fens

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá sukcesí měkkýších společenstev na pěnovcových prameništích v Bílých Karpatech. Pro analýzu byly zvoleny fosiliferní pěnovcové sedimenty prameniště Mituchovci, které se nachází na slovenské straně Bílých Karpat u obce Horná Súča (okres Trenčín). Profil o celkové hloubce 263 cm, rozdělený do 18 vrstev, zachycuje vývoj malakofauny za posledních přibližně 11 400 let. Prameniště tedy začalo vznikat na přelomu pleistocénu a holocénu, což umožňovalo testovat dvě obecné hypotézy holocenního vývoje: (1) zda se i v Bílých Karpatech mohla vyskytovat kryptická refugia lesní malakofauny a (2) zda na bělokarpatských prameništích přežívaly v klimatickém holocenním optimu druhy otevřených a stepních stanovišť. Celkem bylo nalezeno 12 468 kusů schránek měkkýšů 70 druhů. Největší rozvoj malakocenóz byl zaznamenán v období atlantiku (považované za klimatické optimum holocénu), kdy počet druhů přesáhl ve čtyřech vrstvách 40. Na základě změn druhového složení malakocenóz byl pomocí analýzy hlavních komponent (PCA) rozeznán čtyřfázový vývoj prameniště – od staroholocenní parkovité krajiny s otevřenými ploškami (s boreálními druhy Discus ruderatus a Perpolita petronella) přes raně atlantický vápnitý mokřad obklopený lesem (např. Vestia turgida a Carychium tridentatum), dále následoval zapojený les klimatického optima s náročnými druhy Macrogastra latestriata a Discus perspectivus a na závěr otevřené prameniště mladého holocénu s druhy Vallonia pulchella a Oxyloma elegans. Z výsledků práce vyplývá, že v oblasti studované lokality se mohla vyskytovat kryptická refugia lesních druhů plžů. Naopak hypotéza o kontinuálním přežívání světlomilných či výskytu stepních druhů na prameništích potvrzena nebyla. Stepní druhy v profilu Mituchovci chybí a žádný z nalezených druhů otevřených stanovišť se zde nevyskytoval kontinuálně. V období klimatického optima holocénu v plně rozvinutých lesních společenstvech nebyly heliofilní druhy zaznamenány vůbec.

Abstract:

This work deals with the succession of molluscan communities at spring fens in the White Carpathian Mts. Fossiliferous sediments of the Mituchovci spring fen located in the Slovak part of the White Carpathians near the village of Horná Súča (Trenčín district) were selected for this analysis. A deep profile, 263 cm in total, was divided into 18 layers. It documents development of mollusc assemblages over the past approximately 11,400 years. Hence, the spring fen has been developing since the turn of the Pleistocene and Holocene, which allowed testing two general hypotheses of Holocene development: (1) whether cryptic refuges of woodland malacofauna could occur in the White Carpathians and (2) whether steppe species and open-landscape species survived the climatic Holocene optimum at the White Carpathians spring fens. A total number of 12 468 molluscs of 70 species were found. The richest assemblage was recorded in the climate optimum, when the number of species exceeded 40 in four layers. According to changes in snail species composition, a four-phase development of the spring fen was identified – from a park landscape with open patches during the early Holocene (with boreal species Discus ruderatus and Perpolita petronella) through the early Atlantic calcareous wetlands surrounded by forests (with Vestia turgida and Carychium tridentatum), then a shaded woodland of the climatic optimum with demanding Macrogastra latestriata and Discus perspectivus to an open, young Holocene spring fen with Vallonia pulchella and Oxyloma elegans. These results suggest the existence of cryptic refuges for woodland land snails in the surroundings of the studied fen site. The hypothesis of continuous survival of heliophilous species or the occurrence of steppe species at spring fens was not confirmed. Steppe species in the studied profile were missing, and none of the open-landscape species occur continuously in the profile. Heliophilous, open-habitat species were not recorded during the Holocene climatic optimum in fully developed forest communities at all.
