Female Criminality in Victorian England as illustrated in Waters' Affinity

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá situací kriminálnic z doby viktoriánské Anglie, jejich postavením ve společnosti a podmínkami během jejich uvěznění, to vše ilustrované historickou fikcí Affinity od Sarah Waters. V práci jsou popsány změny ve společnosti, jenž se udály v návaznosti na průmyslovou revoluci a je ukázáno jak tyto změny ovlivnily kriminalitu druhé poloviny 19. století. Je uvedena tehdejší představa ideální ženy jako matky a manželky a způsob, kterým byl tento ideál v rozporu s kriminálnicemi. Práce nastiňuje obecnou zločinnost ve viktoriánské Anglii, s bližším pohledem na situaci žen. Detailně jsou popsány zločiny, které ženy nejvíce páchaly, jako byla prostituce, opilství, krádež v obchodech či vražda, především novorozeňat. Práce také zmiňuje způsoby vyhnutí se trestu, jako bylo zproštění viny na základě těhotenství nebo nepříčetnosti. Hlavní část práce je zaměřena na život v ženských věznicích, tak jak jej popisuje Affinity. Nejprve je popsán systém viktoriánských věznic, představeny dva nejpoužívanější vězeňské režimy (systém založený na zákazu mluvení a na samotě) a nastíněny rozdíly mezi ženskými a mužskými věznicemi. Práce se dále blíže soustřeďuje na vězeňskou rutinu a každodenní život, což ilustruje pomocí Watersova fiktivního zpodobení věznice Millbank. Zabývá se popisem přijímacího procesu, specifikami ženského vězeňského režimu a odporem vězeňkyň. Práce je pak zakončena přiblížením problémů, kterým musí čelit propuštěné vězeňkyně při začleňování se zpátky do společnosti.

Abstract:

The thesis explores the situation of Victorian women criminals, their position in society and the conditions of their imprisonment, illustrating it on Sarah Waters' fictional novel Affinity. The thesis describes the changes in society in relation to the Industrial revolution and shows how they influenced the contemporary criminality. It outlines the notion of the ideal woman as a wife and a mother and portrays in which ways this ideal was contradicted by criminal women. The thesis outlines the Victorian crime in general, giving then closer look on the situation of women. The most frequent crimes they committed are explored in details, including prostitution, drunkenness, shoplifting and murder, especially that of the newborns. It also demonstrates how accused women could escape their punishment, using insanity or belly plea. The main part of the thesis is focused on the life in women prisons as illustrated on Waters' Affinity. It first describes the system of Victorian prisons, introduces the two most used prison regimes (the silent and separate system) and demonstrates the differences between the men and women prisons. Then it closely focuses on the prison routine and the everyday life of the prisoners and illustrates it on Waters' fictional representation of Millbank prison. It deals with the admission process, the specifics of women prison regime and the prisoner's opposition to that regime, concluding with the difficulties that women ex-convicts had to face.
