Erwin Panofsky's Theory of Iconology and Its Aspects

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá aplikací teorie Erwina Panofského, jež se týká interpretace výtvarných děl. Teorie je vysvětlena a? poté aplikována na vybraná díla Clauda Moneta, který je představitelem impresionismu. Panofského metoda sestává ze tří kroků, kdy se první krok zve prvotní neboli přirozený význam, jím se zabývá předikonografický rozbor, druhým krokem pak je druhotný neboli konvenční význam, jenž spadá pod metodu ikonografie a? třetí krok vnitřní význam neboli obsah je konečně předmětem ikonologie. V rámci této bakalářské práce byla jeho metoda vyzkoušena na Monetovu sérii stohů. Během samotné aplikace v rámci prvotního neboli přirozeného významu došlo k identifikaci stohů na této Monetově sérii a také se díky identifikaci odhalila zajímavá skutečnost. Ukázalo se, že malíř znázornil stohy slámy a nikoliv sena, jak se uvádí v mnoha zdrojích a to navzdory tomu, že originální názvy některých obrazů neobsahují bližší určení materiálu, ze kterého jsou stohy postavené. V bakalářské práci se nastínil rozpor mezi tím, co o druhotném neboli konvenčním významu tvrdí Panofsky a co o něm tvrdí Roelof van Straten. Autor této práce se neshoduje ani s jedním názorem. Lze se domnívat, že i zátiší nebo krajinomalba mohou někdy obsahovat znaky identifikovatelné druhotným neboli konvenčním významem. Aplikace Panofského metody ukázala, že série stohů sena nenese druhotný neboli konvenční význam. Panofsky také uváděl, že vnitřní význam neboli obsah pomůže pochopit zrod daného díla ? výběr objektu a jeho způsob vyobrazení. Za tímto účelem se v této práci sledují různé vlivy, které mohly na Moneta působit: vliv předcházejících uměleckých slohů, historické doby, vědeckých objevů a filosofie, zároveň se zde nastiňují Monetovy vlastní zájmy a preference. Pomocí všech těchto aspektů se vysvětluje Monetova série stohů. Vnitřní význam neboli obsah tedy skutečně pomůže pochopit zrod daného díla. Aplikace Panofského metody prokázala, že tato metoda není strohý a sekvenční algoritmus, jak naznačoval Roelof van Straten, ale spíše soubor zásad, jejichž dodržováním lze dospívat k nějakému cíli. Rozbor výtvarných děl pomocí Panofského metody může probíhat ve všech třech krocích zároveň, libovolně se vracet a provádět korektury. Ostatně tímto způsobem probíhal rozbor Monetovy série v rámci této práce. Panofsky touto svou trojdílnou metodou zkoumal především výtvarné umění renesance, které se snažil rozlišit od středověkého a? antického výtvarného umění. Předpokládal však její univerzální platnost. V rámci této práce byla tato metoda vyzkoušena také na soubor děl představitele impresionismu. Lze potvrdit, že alespoň v tomto rozšíření je možno Panofského metodu také použít.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the application of the Erwin Panofsky's theory of visual art interpretation. The theory is explained and then applied on selected works of Claude Monet, a representative of Impressionism. Panofsky's method consists of three levels, or strata, of understanding. The first one is called the primary, or natural, subject matter and is dealt with by pre-iconographical description; the second one, called secondary, or conventional, subject matter is dealt with by iconographical analysis; and finally the third one, the intrinsic meaning, or content, is a subject of iconological interpretation. This thesis applies Panofsky's method on Monet's Grainstacks series. During the application of the method's first level, i.e. the natural subject matter, the stacks in the Monet's series were identified which lead to an interesting discovery. It turned out that the artist actually painted straw stacks, not haystacks, unlike many sources state regardless of the fact that the original names of some paintings do not specify the material of which the stacks are made. The thesis depicts the discrepancy between what Panofsky and Roelof van Straten claim of the secondary, or conventional subject matter. The author of this thesis does not agree with neither of these opinion. It is possible to claim that even still-life or landscape paintings may sometimes carry attributes identifiable through the secondary, or conventional, subject matter. The application of Panofsky's method proved, that the Graintacks series does not carry the secondary, or conventional subject matter. Panofsky also stated that the intrinsic meaning, or content, helps in understanding the genesis of a given artifact - the selection of the subject and the manner of its rendering. Because of this reason, the thesis traces various influences which could affect Monet: the influence of previous artistic styles, the historical period, scientific discoveries and the philosophy; it also describes Monet's own personal interests and preferences. All these aspects are used to explain Monet's Grainstacks series. The intrinsic meaning, or content, then, really helps understanding the genesis of a given artifact. The application of Panofsky's method has proved that the method is not only a stringent, sequential algorithm, as implied by Roelof van Straten, but rather a set of principles, by adhering to which it is possible to reach a certain objective. Analyzing visual art using Panofsky's method may proceed on all the three levels simultaneously, recur arbitrarily and be revised. In fact, this is the very way in which the analysis of Monet's series was done for the purpose of this thesis. Panofsky applied this three-strata method especially on the visual arts of the Renaissance, which he was trying to distinguish from the medieval and antique visual arts, however, he supposed the method to be valid universally. Within the scope of this thesis, the method was also applied on a set of paintings of a representative of Impressionism. We may confirm that, at least within this scope, Panofsky's method may be applied as well.
