This bachelor’s thesis deals with the synchronic and diachronic analysis of English modal verbs expressing deontic meanings. The main aim is to examine various legal texts where deontic modalities can be expected to be frequently expressed, and to discover the frequency and types of modal verbs used in different periods of English.
