Underground to Everywhere: The London Underground in British Urban Fantasy at the Turn of the 21st Century

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je v korpusu několika románů žánru urban fantasy identifikovat témata vztahující se k londýnskému metru, analyzovat jejich vztah k historii a každodenní realitě a zjistit, zda a jakým způsobem využívají a doplňují v beletrii již existující témata. Záměrem první části je poskytnout stručný historický přehled od vzniku metra v roce 1863 do současnosti a zmínit jeho zobrazení v beletrii. Tato část se soustředí na nejdůležitější události v historii a také na jejich kulturní a sociální dopad. Druhá část popisuje důvody pro výběr žánru urban fantasy a metody použité pro sestavení korpusu a pro jeho čtení. Představeny jsou zvolené knihy a role, kterou v nich metro hraje. Třetí část práce se pokouší identifikovat témata v korpusu britské urban fantasy od roku 1988 do 2018 a propojit je s historickými událostmi, dříve použitými tématy a dalšími trendy v Londýně. Výsledkem je devět témat opakujících se v korpusu. Jednotlivé podkapitoly jsou věnovány detailní analýze těchto témat, podpořené citacemi z širokého výběru primární a sekundární literatury.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to identify the themes connected to the London Underground in the corpus of several urban fantasy novels, to analyze them regarding their relationship to history and everyday reality, and to find out if and how they draw upon and complement the themes already existing in fiction. The objective of the first part is to provide a brief historical background from the origin of the Underground in 1863 to the contemporary period and to mention its depiction in fiction. It focuses on the most important events in history and also on the cultural and social impact of those events. The second part describes the reasons for choosing the urban fantasy genre and the methods used for the selection of the corpus and its reading. It also introduces the selected books and the part the Underground plays in them. The third part of the thesis then tries to identify the themes in a selected corpus of British urban fantasy works spanning from 1988 to 2018 and to connect them to the historical events, previously used themes, and other trends in London. The result is nine themes recurring in the corpus. The subchapters of the third part are devoted to the detailed analysis of these themes, supported with citations from an array of primary and secondary sources.
