US-China Rivalry as Perspective Partners from in Southeast Asian states' Perspective

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zkoumá soupeření Číny a USA v regionu jihovýchodní Asie se zaměřením na čtyři zkoumané státy: Filipíny, Indonésii, Thajsko a Vietnam. Práce zjišťuje vývoj aktuálního veřejného mínění uvnitř zkoumaných států vůči působení uvedených mocností v regionu, a to zejména ve vztahu k vnímání hrozeb, ekonomického vlivu a obecné náklonnosti vůči Číně a USA, ve snaze zjistit preference občanů v případě vypuknutí konfliktu v regionu. Následně se zaměřuje na bilaterální vztahy zkoumaných zemí s oběma mocnostmi a diskutuje opodstatnění zjištěného veřejného mínění.

Abstract:

Thesis examines the China-US rivalry in the Southeast Asian region, focusing on the four countries under study: the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. The thesis investigates the evolution of current public opinion within the states under study towards the actions of these powers in the region, particularly in relation to threat perceptions, economic influence and general sentiment towards China and the US, in an attempt to ascertain the preferences of citizens should conflict erupt in the region. It then focuses on the bilateral relations of the countries under study with the two powers and discusses the rationale behind the public opinion findings.
