Neurální kmenové buňky jsou nediferencované buňky, které jsou v in vivo podmínkách tripotentní, tzn. dávají vzniknout třem typům terminálně diferencovaných buněk: neuronům, astrocytům a oligodendrocytům. Mají také schopnost sebeobnovy a do určité míry i proliferace. Neural stem cells are defined as undifferentiated cells capable of self-renewal and multipotent differentiation into the three principle cell types of the nervous system in vivo – neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes.
