Catharsis in the chosen ancient tragedies

Abstract:

Úkolem diplomové práce „Katarze ve vybraných antických tragédiích“ je rozebrat pojem tragédie, její počátky, vývoj a hlavní představitele, kde se zaměřuje na jednotlivé autory a jejich pojetí tragédie. V této souvislosti jsou pak uvedeny i počátky a rozvoj antického divadla. Diplomová práce se rovněž věnuje tehdejším požadavkům ohledně „správné“ tragédie. Pozornost je soustředěna zejména na Aristotelovo pojetí tragédie a v další části se práce zaměřuje na samotný pojem katarze, kde se snaží vysvětlit tento termín, případně uvést i definice a vyjádření jednotlivých autorů k tomuto pojmu. Jako klíčové se však pro tuto práci jeví Aristotelovo pojetí katarze. Úkolem poslední části je nalézt jednotlivé katarzní momenty, případně postavy ve vybraných antických tragédiích a doložit je konkrétní scénou z dané hry, což je rovněž cílem této práce – nalézt a popsat instanci katarze u vybraných děl. Pro tento účel byly zvoleny hry významných antických tragiků – Aischyla, Sofokla a Euripida.

Abstract:

The main purpose of my Diploma work “Catharsis in the chosen ancient tragedies” is to analyse the definition of tragedy, its origins, progress and main representatives – its authors and their concept of tragedy. There are also mentioned origins and the progress of ancient theatre in this connection. The Diploma work also discusses the standard of “the correct” tragedy at that time. Attention is concentrated particularly on Aristotle’s concept of tragedy, and the work focuses on the theory of catharsis in other section, where the work tries to explain this term, eventually tries to bring in also some definitions or formulations of chosen authors. However, Aristotle’s concept of catharsis appears as the crucial topic of this diploma work. The aim of the last part is to find separate cathartic moments, eventually characters in chosen ancient tragedies and to produce evidence for the particular scene from chosen performance. This is also the goal of this diploma work – to find and describe instances of catharsis in chosen pieces. The work of important ancient tragedy writers – Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides was selected for this purpose.
