Shredder Gammarus fossarum as an ecosystem engineer: its predation effect on the assemblage of chironomid larvae

Abstract:

Blešivec potoční Gammarus fossarum Koch 1835 je v České republice nejběžnější zástupce různonožců (Amphipoda). Žije v čistých potocích a říčkách a největších hustot dosahuje na bazických prameništích. Typicky se s ním můžeme setkat na minerálně bohatých slatiništích, zatímco v minerálně chudých (kyselých) slatiništích skoro chybí. Podobně se podél tohoto minerotrofního gradientu mění i druhové složení společenstva jiných prameništních bezobratlých jako jsou pakomárovití (Diptera: Chironomidae). Jedno z možných vysvětlení změny druhového složení společenstva pakomárovitých podél minerotrofního gradientu je predační nebo disturbační tlak blešivce na minerálně bohatých lokalitách a s ním související ústup některých pakomárovitých do kyselejší části gradientu. Tento tlak indikuje i výskyt larev pakomárů s přenosnými schránkami na bazických lokalitách, kde Gammarus fossarum dosahuje nejvyšších hustot. V této bakalářské práci pomocí literární rešerše a pilotní studie nastavuji terénní experiment, pomocí něhož bude možné otestovat hypotézu o predačním, popřípadě disturbačním vlivu blešivce na společenstvo larev slatiništních pakomárů.

Abstract:

Gammarus fossarum Koch 1835 is the most common species of Amphipoda in the Czech Republic. It lives in clean streams and is most abundant in mineral rich spring fens, while it is almost missing from mineral poor (acid) spring fens. The taxonomic composition of assemblages of other spring invertebrates like Chironomidae (Diptera) changes along the gradient of mineral richness, too. One of the possible explanations of the chironomid assemblage´s change along the gradient of mineral richness is a predatory or disturbance pressure of Gammarus fossarum at mineral rich sites, associated with a retreat of some chironomid species to acidic parts of the gradient. This pressure might be indicated by the occurrence of species with transportable cases at mineral rich sites, where Gammarus fossarum reaches the highest densities. In this bachelor thesis, I use literature review and a pilot study to set a field experiment for testing the hypothesis of the predatory or disturbance Gammarus effect on the assemblage of chironomid larvae at spring fens.
