The Effectiveness of Quasi-Logical Arguments: The Pragma-Dialectical Analysis

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na koncept tzv. kvazi-logických argumentů, který byl předložen novou rétorikou, teorií argumentace, kterou představili Chaïm Perelman a Lucie Olbrechts-Tytecová. Kvazi-logické argumenty jsou definovány jako argumenty, které se podobají logickým nebo matematickým demonstracím, a jsou proto účinné vzhledem k publiku. Obecným cílem této práce je vysvětlit tezi o účinnosti kvazi-logických argumentů z hlediska pragma-dialektiky, což je moderní teorie argumentace, která má dostatečně bohatý aparát k výzkumu účinnosti argumentace. Využití této perspektivy předpokládá provedení dvou navazujících kroků. Nejprve je nutné provést adekvátní explikaci pojmu kvazi-logických argumentů v cílovém systému pojmů pragma-dialektiky. V této práci je navrženo, že vzhledem k vágnosti a komplexnosti původní definice kvazi-logických argumentů je nejvýhodnější postupovat od rekonstrukce příkladů, které Perelman a Olbrecthts-Tytecová využívají jako ilustrace. Výsledný explikát pojmu kvazi-logických argumentů tak může mít podobu množiny technik, které jsou realizovány v ilustracích. Druhý krok spočívá v nalezení pragma-dialektického vysvětlení účinnosti takových technik. Kvazi-logické argumentační techniky jsou uvažovány jako případy strategického manévrování mezi snahami mluvčího zapůsobit a zároveň argumentovat rozumným způsobem. Je zkoumáno, jakými způsoby mohou tyto techniky přispívat k efektivnímu řešení názorového střetu. První krok je v práci ilustrován případovou studií explikace konkrétního podschématu kvazi-logických argumentů, tzv. argumentů z reciprocity. Druhý krok je ilustrován analýzou strategického manévrování prostřednictvím užití recipročního schématu v Démosthenově První Olynthské řeči. Je ukázáno, že kvazi-logické argumenty mohou být z hlediska pragma-dialektiky chápány jako heterogenní třída různých argumentačních technik s jedinečnými účinky.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the concept of so-called quasi-logical arguments that was submitted by the new rhetoric, the theory of argumentation which was introduced by Chaïm Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca. Quasi-logical arguments are defined as arguments similar to logical or mathematical demonstrations and therefore effective in regards to the audience. The general aim of this study is to explain the thesis of the effectiveness of quasi-logical arguments from the point of view of pragma-dialectics which is a modern theory of argumentation with a sufficiently extensive apparatus to investigate the effectiveness of argumentation. Applying the pragma-dialectical approach, two subsequent steps are required. First, it is necessary to implement an adequate explication of the concept of quasi-logical arguments in the target system of the concepts of pragma-dialectics. In this study, it is argued that with regard to the vagueness and complexity of the original definition of quasi-logical arguments, the most advantageous one seems to proceed from the reconstruction of examples advanced by Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca to serve as illustrations of quasi-logical arguments. The final explicatum of the concept of quasi-logical arguments can take the form of a set of techniques that are implemented in the illustrations. The second step consists in providing a pragma-dialectical clarification of the effectiveness of such techniques. Quasi-logical argumentation techniques are conceived as cases of strategic maneuvering between speaker’s attempts to be effective and reasonable. It is explored in what ways they can contribute to an effective resolving of a conflict of opinion. The first step is illustrated by the case study of explication of sub-scheme of quasi-logical arguments, so-called arguments of reciprocity. The second step is illustrated by the analysis of strategic maneuvering with a particular instance of the reciprocal scheme in Demosthenes’ First Olynthiac. It is showed that quasi-logical arguments can be seen from point of view of pragma-dialectics as a heterogeneous class of different argumentation techniques with unique effects.
