Burghers and arts in nobility-owned towns at the beginning of early modern period. The case of towns Telč and Slavonice in the 16th century

Abstract:

Disertační práce je věnována vztahu měšťanů k umění v malých vrchnostenských městech na počátku raného novověku. Na příkladu Telče a Slavonic v období 16. století jsou ukázány typické umělecké zakázky, za nimiž stáli jednotliví měšťané, cechy nebo městské rady reprezentující celou městkou obec. Úvodní kapitola zasazuje zkoumaný problém do širšího historiografického kontextu a otevírá otázku, jakou roli měli měšťané v uměleckém provozu. Z rozboru situace vyplývá, že aktivity vedoucí ke vzniku díla v prostředí měst nelze jednoduše shrnout pod pojmy jako „mecenát“ či „patronát“, protože nepostihují zdaleka všechny aspekty složité problematiky. Následují tři mikrohistoricky zaměřené části, v nichž je nejdříve analyzována společenská struktura měst a urbanismus; dále jednotlivé typy měšťanských a městských uměleckých zakázek; a nakonec role uměleckých děl v komplikované náboženské situaci. Závěrečná kapitola je věnována umělcům, kteří v městech pracovali, a stylové stránce uměleckých děl vytvořených ve specifických goticko-renesančních formách. V obecné rovině se práce snaží postihnout rozdíly mezi významným rezidenčním městem (Telč) a ryze lokálním centrem bez trvalé přítomnosti vrchnosti (Slavonice) a nabídnout ucelený pohled na uměleckou činnost ve složitém organismu města.

Abstract:

The dissertation focuses on the relation between art and burghers in small seigniorial towns at the beginning of the Early Modern Age. Using the sixteenth century Telč and Slavonice as examples, the author analyzes typical works of art that were ordered by individual burghers, but also guilds and town councils, which represented the whole urban community. In the introductory chapter, the topic is first situated in the wider historiography context, and a question is raised about the role of burghers in art production of the period. The analysis of the situation clearly shows that it is not possible to use one umbrella term for all activities related to art production in towns, e.g. “arts patronage”, as no such term is able to cover each and every aspect of the topic. The first chapter is followed by three sections dealing with microhistory, which analyze the social structure of the towns and urbanism, study each type of works of art ordered by burghers and town authorities, and explore the role of such works in the complicated religious situation in those days. The final chapter deals with artists working in the two towns and looks at the style of the works of art created in specific Gothic-Renaissance forms. In general, the dissertation attempts to outline the differences between an important residential town (Telč) and a very local centre where the nobility was not permanently present (Slavonice), and to provide a comprehensive view of art production in the complex urban organism.
