Reflections of the Nigerian Culture in Czech Translation

Anotácia:

Předkládaná diplomová práce si klade za cíl zhodnotit frekvenci použití různých překladatelských strategií při překladu kulturních referencí z anglicky psané nigerijské literatury do češtiny. Práce také zkoumá, zda a do jaké míry je výběr překladatelské strategie ovlivněn dobou vyhotovení překladu, a jak obecně je zdrojová kultura cílovému publiku v překladech analyzovaných děl prezentována. Teoretickým podkladem pro analýzu textů jsou práce zabývající se teorií kulturního překladu a teorií polysystémů. Studovanými texty jsou romány Už nikdy klid Chinuy Achebeho (v orig. No Longer at Ease, vyd. 1960, přeložil Jiří Valja), Světla Lagosu Cypriana Ekwensiho (v orig. Jagua Nana, vyd. 1961, přeložil Vladimír Klíma), Amerikána Chimamandy Ngozi Adichieové (v orig. Americanah, vyd. 2013, přeložil Petr Štádler) a paměti Woleho Soyinky Aké: Léta dětství (v orig. Aké: The Years of Childhood, vyd. 1981, přeložil Vladimír Klíma).

Abstract:

The objective of the present thesis is to evaluate the frequency of use of different strategies in the translation of culture-specific items from English-language Nigerian literature into Czech. It also analyzes whether and to what extent is the choice of translation strategy influenced by the time of the translation and how is the source culture presented to the target readership in the studied works in general. The theoretical framework for the analysis consists of the works concerned with the cultural turn in translation studies, the theory of polysystems and Lawrence Venuti’s approach to domestication and foreignization in translation. The studied texts are No Longer at Ease by Chinua Achebe (1960; translated by Jiří Valja), Jagua Nana by Cyprian Ekwensi (1961; translated by Vladimír Klíma), Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (2013; translated by Petr Štádler) and Wole Soyinka’s memoir Aké: The Years of Childhood (1981; translated by Vladimír Klíma).
