The Mother-Child Relationship in Four Selected Works of Late Nineteenth-Century American Literature

Anotace:

Tato práce je koncipována jako komparativní studie čtyř literárních postav – matek. Jedná se o postavu Edny z díla The Awakening od Kate Chopin, Roxy z díla The Tragedy of Pudd´nhead Wilson od Marka Twaina, Mary z díla Maggie: A Girl of the Streets od Stephena Cranea a Mrs. Blackett z díla The Country of the Pointed Firs od Sarah Orne Jewett. Práce porovnává čtyři rozdílné postoje jednotlivých žen ke svým dětem a analyzuje důsledky jejich chování a míru vlivu na jejich děti. Hlavní myšlenka spočívá v tvrzení, že pro úspěšný vztah matky a dítěte je třeba určitý stupeň svobody – jako v případě vztahu Mrs. Blackett a Mrs. Todd v knize The Country of the Pointed Firs. Naopak nedostatek této svobody způsobuje nesnáze, důkazem toho je postoj Edny v knize The Awakening. Roxy z knihy The Tragedy of Pudd´nhead Wilson pak představuje další typ přístupu matky ke svým dětem – věnování veškerého potenciálu do svého dítěte a obětování všeho pro jeho blaho. Případ Mary (z knihy Maggie: A Girl of the Streets) pak ukazuje důsledky zanedbávání výchovy dětí. Hlavní stať práce je rozdělena do čtyř kapitol, které pojednávají vždy o jedné zvolené knize. Každá tato kapitola je pak rozdělena do dvou částí, první z nich se zabývá postojem matky k dítěti a druhá pak nabízí analýzu specifického tématu, které se vztahuje k vývoji jejich vztahu. Tato témata jsou rozdílná u každé knihy, nicméně značně přispívají k pochopení hlavních charakteristik daného vztahu. Závěr pak shrnuje všechny důležité poznatky, které se vyskytly v textu práce.

Abstract:

The thesis is designed as a comparative analysis of four literary characters of mothers – Edna, the central character of Kate Chopin´ s The Awakening, Roxy, the central character of Mark Twain´s The Tragedy of Pudd´nhead Wilson, Mary, one of the characters in Stephen Crane´s Maggie: A Girl of the Streets and Mrs. Blackett, one of the characters in Sarah Orne Jewett´s The Country of the Pointed Firs. The thesis compares and contrasts the four different attitudes of the mothers and analyses the consequences – how their approaches influenced the development of the children. The main argument consists in the assumption that a certain degree of freedom is needed for a successful mother-child relationship, as in the case of Mrs Blackett´s and Mrs. Todd´s relationship in Sarah Orne Jewett´s The Country of the Pointed Firs. In contrast, the lack of this freedom and its influence on the protagonist is described in Kate Chopin´s The Awakening. Roxy in Mark Twain´s The Tragedy of Pudd´nhead Wilson represents another attitude to her child – a devoted mother who is able to sacrifice everything to make her child´s life better. Mary in Stephen Crane´s Maggie: A Girl of the Streets then proves the consequences of the neglect of her children. Considering the structure of the thesis, the main body of the thesis is divided into four chapters, each one deals with one of the books. These four chapters are divided in two parts – the first part investigates the attitude of the mother toward her child in the particular book and the second part offers an analysis of the specific themes related to the mother-child relationship that occurs in the book. These themes are different in each chapter; however they contribute significantly to the development of the relationships and to the understanding of the major characteristics of the mother-child relationships. The conclusion then summarizes all the important findings that occur throughout the thesis.
