Does smoking have a negative effect on happiness? Exploring the relationship between smoking and subjective well-being.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje subjektivnímu blahobytu, kouření a jejich vzájemnému vztahu. Cílem je poté prostřednictvím štěstí a deprese prokázat negativní vliv kouření na subjektivní blahobyt českých občanů, což představí odlišný pohled na danou problematiku a napomůže tak protikuřáckým politikám při vylepšování a zavádění nových opatření. Na základě dat získaných prostřednictvím dotazníkového šetření distribuovaného mezi zaměstnance základní školy, stavební firmy a studenty je sestaveno šest regresních modelů (tři pro štěstí a tři pro depresi), k jejichž odhadu je využita metoda nejmenších čtverců (OLS). Nejprve je vztah zkoumán na celém vzorku pozorování (274) a následně samostatně na ženách (160) a mužích (114) pro dosažení co nejpřesnějších výsledků. Na základě výzkumu se vliv proměnných kuřáckého chování na štěstí a depresi ukázal jako statisticky nevýznamný v případě žen a celého vzorku pozorování. U mužů se následně projevil negativní vliv na štěstí jako významný, čímž poukázal na existenci negativního vlivu kouření na subjektivní blahobyt, jež je v souladu s výsledky většiny dosavadních studií zkoumajících vztah kouření a subjektivního blahobytu, případně štěstí.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis is devoted to subjective well-being, smoking and their interrelationship. The aim is then to demonstrate the negative effect of smoking on the subjective well-being of Czech citizens through happiness and depression, which will present a different view of the issue and thus help anti-tobacco policies in improving and implementing new measures. Six regression models (three for happiness and three for depression) are compiled using the least squares (OLS) method to estimate the data generated through the questionnaire survey distributed among primary school stuff, construction company stuff and students. First, the relationship is examined on a whole sample of observations (274) and then separately on women (160) and men (114) for the most accurate results. Based on the research, the effect of variables of smoking behavior on happiness and depression proved statistically insignificant for women and a full sample of observations. Men subsequently experienced a negative effect on happiness as significant, pointing to the existence of a negative effect of smoking on subjective well-being, consistent with the results of the most present studies examining the relationship between smoking and subjective well-being, or happiness.
