Experimenting in geography lessons: ground water

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá zhodnocením možných přínosů školního geografického pokusu v hodinách zeměpisu z hlediska úrovně dosažených znalostí u žáků 6. ročníku základní školy. Cílem bylo navrhnout, zrealizovat a zhodnotit přínos školního geografického pokusu z hlediska úrovně dosažených znalostí u žáků 6. ročníku základní školy. V teoretické části práce je vymezen experiment/pokus a širší kontext didaktického využití didaktických experimentů ve vzdělávání. V přehledové kapitole jsou shrnuty dosavadní domácí i zahraniční výzkumy věnované využití školních pokusů ve výuce geografie. V praktické části je popsán školní geografický pokus tematikou vzniku, využití a znečištění podzemní vody, včetně souvisejících doporučení pro učitele. Pro naplnění cíle práce byla vybrána výzkumná metoda kvaziexperimentu, kdy ve dvou různých třídách základní školy byly vyhodnoceny efekty vyučovací hodiny obsahující školní geografický pokus v porovnání s vyučovací hodinou realizovanou bez využití pokusu. Výsledky byly vyhodnoceny analýzou didaktických testů, kterými byl experiment ukončen. Následně byly s oporou v analyzovaných datech zhodnoceny přínosy a úskalí využití školního geografického pokusu ve výuce zeměpisu na základních školách. Výsledky práce ukazují, že hodina, jež proběhla pomocí geografického pokusu, byla z hlediska úrovně žáky dosažených znalostí téměř stejně úspěšná jako hodina, která byla realizovaná bez využití pokusu. Proto by geografické pokusy měly mít v hodinách zeměpisu své místo, protože každá vyučovací metoda nabízí žákům něco jiného a je dobré různé metody vhodně kombinovat.

Abstract:

The master's thesis deals with the evaluation of the possible benefits of a school geography experiment in geography classes in terms of the level of knowledge acquired by pupils in the 6th grade of primary school. The goal was to design, implement and evaluate the benefits of a school geography experiment in terms of the level of knowledge acquired by pupils in 6th grade of primary school. The theoretical part of the thesis defines the experiment and the broader context of didactic experiments in education. The review chapter summarizes previous domestic and international research on the use of school experiments in geography education. The practical section describes a school geography experiment on the topic of groundwater formation, use and pollution, including related recommendations for teachers. In order to meet the objectives of the thesis, a quasi-experimental research method was chosen, whereby the effects of a lesson containing a school geography experiment were evaluated in two different primary school classes in comparison with a lesson implemented without the use of the experiment. The results are evaluated by analysing the didactic tests that concluded the experiment. Subsequently, the benefits and pitfalls of using the school geography experiment in teaching geography in primary schools are evaluated with the support of research data. The results of the thesis show that the lesson conducted using the geography experiment was almost as successful in terms of the level of knowledge achieved by the pupils as the lesson conducted without the use of the experiment. Therefore, geography experiments should have their place in geography lessons, because each teaching method offers something different to pupils and it is good to combine different methods appropriately.
