Media Representation of Arabic Revolutions: Content Analysis

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá mediálním obrazem arabských revolucí v Egyptě a v Tunisku v denících Mladá fronta DNES a Právo. Cílem je popsat a porovnat formální i obsahové postupy používané médii při konstrukci agendy arabských revolucí. Autorka pracovala se 177 příspěvky z období prosinec 2010 – únor 2011, pomocí nichž ukazuje, jak mediální obraz ovlivňovaly žurnalistické rutiny a editoriální ideologie. Pro výzkum autorka využila obsahovou analýzu doplněnou o interpretativní čtení. Teoretická práce vychází zejména z teorie žurnalistických rutin, bulvarizace, zpravodajských hodnot a mediálního rámování. Závěry ukazují, že deník MF DNES kladl důraz na lidský aspekt revolucí, zatímco deník Právo akcentoval politický rozměr. Autorka rovněž vysledovala větší výskyt bulvarizačních indikátorů v příspěvcích deníku MF DNES, což je dáno zejména přítomností zvláštního zpravodaje Jana Zátorského v Káhiře v době vrcholících nepokojů. Přestože oba deníky framingu ve většině článků nevyužívaly, můžeme říci, že deník MF DNES akcentoval negativní aspekty bývalého egyptského a tuniského režimu, což koresponduje i s vyšším podílem legitimizujících faktorů vůči arabským lidovým povstáním.

Abstract:

The following master thesis is media picture of the Arabian revolution in Egypt and Tunisia in the daily magazines Mladá Fronta DNES and Právo. The aim of the thesis is to describe and compare both formal and content steps used in the media during the construction of the agenda of the arabian revolution. The author worked with 177 contributions from the period of December 2010 till February 2011. The author used the articles to show how the media picture influenced journalism routines and editorial ideology. Content analysis was used for the research, followed by interpretative reading.Theoretical part arises especially from the theory of journalism routines, infotainment and media framing. The conclusion shows, that daily magazine MF DNES stressed human aspect of the revolution, while daily magazine Právo pointed out especially political factor. The author also figured out larger number of infotainment indicators in the articles of daily magazine MF DNES, which is caused by the presence of the special reporter Jan Zátorský in Cairo during the escalation of the revolution. Although both daily magazines did not use framing in the majority of the articles, one can say, that daily magazine MF DNES stressed negative aspects of the former Egypt and Tunisian regime, which goes hand in hand in the larger scale of the legitimate factors towards Arabian revolution.
