Hope, Gratitude and Character Strengths in Relation to Flourishing of the Homeless People

Abstract:

Ústředním tématem diplomové práce je naděje, vděčnost, silné stránky a jejich vztah k optimálnímu prospívání u lidí bez domova z azylových domů Armády spásy. Kromě výše uvedených vztahů je cílem naší práce také porovnání lidí bez domova a zaměstnanců Armády spásy. Výzkumný soubor tvoří 65 respondentů (83,1% mužů a 16,9% žen, ve věku od 19 do 75 let). Na výzkum jsme použili baterii testů složenou z metod Adult Hope Scale (Snyder a kol., 1991), The Gratitude Questionnaire – 6 (Emmons, McCullough, Tsang, 2002), Signature Strengths Test (Seligman, 2011) a Psychological Flourishing Scale (Diener, Biswas-Diener, 2008). Pomocí korelační analýzy a následně regresní analýzou byl zjištěn vztah mezi mírou naděje a optimálním prospíváním a také mezi mírou vděčnosti a optimálním prospíváním. V rámci této práce je popsaná struktura silných stránek lidí bez domova, nejvýše respondenti skórovali v silných stránkách „odpuštění“, „pokora“ a „vytrvalost“. S optimálním prospíváním nejtěsněji korelují stránky „smysl pro krásu“, „spiritualita“ a „vůdcovství“. Lidé bez domova se od zaměstnanců Armády spásy liší v míře optimálního prospívání. Odlišnost těchto dvou skupin v míře naděje a vděčnosti se nepotvrdila. Z demografických faktorů se potvrdila jako prediktor naděje, vděčnosti a optimálního prospívání pouze víra. Výzkum obsahuje také analýzu odpovědí na otevřené otázky týkajících se sledovaných proměnných. Tato práce přináší poznatky z dosud málo probádané oblasti pozitivních charakteristik a jejích vztahů u lidí bez domova.

Abstract:

The central theme of our thesis is hope, gratitude, character strengths and their relation to flourishing of homeless people in the Salvation Army shelters. Beside the aforementioned relations, the goal of our study is the comparison of the homeless people and the Salvation Army employees. The research sample consists of 65 respondents (83,1% men and 16,9% women, in the age 19 to 75 years old). We used a battery of test methods consisting of Adult Hope Scale (Snyder a kol., 1991), Gratitude Questionnaire - 6 (Emmons, McCullough, Tsang, 2002), Signature Stregths Test (Seligman, 2011) and Psychological Flourishing Scale (Diener, Biswas-Diener, 2008). Using the correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis we confirmed the relation between hope and flourishing and between gratitude and flourishing. The structure of signature strengths among homeless people has been described, showing that the respondents scored highest in „forgiveness“, „humility“ and „persistence“. The character strengths with the strongest relation to the flourishing were „sense of beauty“, „spirituality“ and „leadership“. The homeless people differed significantly from the employees in flourishing. The difference between these two groups in hope and gratitude was not comfirmed. Among the demographic variables only faith was confirmed as predictor of hope, gratitud and flourishing. Also included is the qualitative analysis of answers to open-ended questions concerning the aforementioned variables. This thesis offers new insights from a little explored field of positive characteristics and their interrelations among homeless.
