The self-awareness of women in works of Ken Bugul and Calixthe Beyala

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the search of self identity and self-awareness of the main female characters in the following African novels: Riwan, ou, Le chemin de sable from author Ken Bugul and Femme nue, femme noire from author Calixthe Beyala. In the theoretical section, we will concentrate on the most important aspects of the traditional African society that can affect social status of a woman and that differ from the fundamental characteristics of the European society. In the analytical section, we will apply the acquired knowledge and according to the attitudes of the female characters, we will deduce the state of their relationship with themselves.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce se bude zabývat otázkou hledání vlastní identity a uvědomění (si) sama sebe hlavních hrdinek dvou afrických románů: Riwan, ou, Le chemin de sable autorky Ken Bugul a Femme nue, femme noire autorky Calixthe Beyaly. V teoretické části se soustředíme na nejdůležitější aspekty vlastní tradiční africké společnosti, které výrazně ovlivňují postavení ženy, a které se liší od základních charakteristik společnosti evropské. V analytické části pak uplatníme nabyté vědomosti na zmíněných dvou románech a vyvodíme z nich osobní postoje hlavních hrdinek románů ve vztahu k vlastní osobě.
