Sex and Side Differences in Carpal Bones

Abstract:

Genetic predisposition together with external influences, such as amount and type of mechanical load, can result in sex and side differences in the size and shape of the bones. The aim of theoretical part of the thesis was to create an overview of knowledge considering size, shape, order and variability of wrist bones. The aim of practical part of the thesis was to find out whether there are differences in the wrist bone dimensions between sides and sexes in a compact archeological skeletal sample and to compare the results with other studies. Fifty-one bilateral measurements in the whole carpus were studied on the sample of 50 skeletons. The sample originated from medieval and modern-time cemetery located near Saint Jacob's Church in Brno (10 female, 15 male) and early burial medieval site Dětkovice – Za zahradama (12 female, 13 male). Bilateral and sex differences were described using index of sexual dimorphism and index of bilateral asymmetry and analysed using nonparametric statistical tests. In females, level of the relative asymmetry ranged from -12,08 % to +4,59 % and the majority of measurements showed higher values on the left side. In males, level of the relative asymmetry ranged from -14,36 % to +10,96 %, and in contrast, the majority of measurements showed higher values on the right side. Measurements revealed one statistically significant difference between sides in females (maximum length of os lunatum) and two in males (maximum width of joint facet for os lunatum on the os triquetrum and maximum height of os hamatum), which can be caused by small sample size. In general, males had larger size of measured bones on both sides of the body (except for one measurement on the right side and six measurements on the left side), but more pronounced differences between males and females were observed on the right side. No general trends in side differences were found in comparison of asymmetry among different populations. The observed level of sexual dimorphism in four carpal bones (os scaphoideum, os capitatum, os hamatum a os trapezoideum) was similar to the dimorphism in two available comparative populations (Spanish and Mexican sample), while in ccomparison with an English population, the dimorphism of the studied sample was lower on the left side, mostly in proximal wrist bone row.

Abstract:

Genetické vlohy spolu s vnějšími vlivy, jako například míra a typ mechanického zatížení, mohou způsobovat rozdíly ve velikosti a tvaru kostí mezi stranami těla a pohlavími. Cílem teoretické části této práce bylo vytvořit literární přehled poznatků o velikosti, tvaru, uspořádání a variabilitě zápěstních kostí. Cílem praktické části bylo zjistit přítomnost stranových a pohlavních rozdílů v rozměrech zápěstních kostí menšího archeologického kosterního vzorku a porovnat výsledky s jinými studiemi. Sledováno bylo 51 rozměrů na souboru 50 skeletů. Vzorek pocházel ze středověkého a novověkého hřbitova okolo kostela sv. Jakuba v Brně (10 žen a 15 mužů) a z mladohradištního pohřebiště Dětkovice – Za zahradama (12 žen a 13 mužů). Stranové a pohlavní rozdíly byly vyjádřeny pomocí indexů sexuálního dimorfismu a stranové asymetrie a testovány pomocí neparametrických statistických testů. U žen se relativní míra asymetrie pohybovala od -12,08 % do +4,59 %, přičemž převážná část sledovaných znaků byla větší na levé straně. U mužů se relativní míra asymetrie pohybovala od -14,36 % do +10,96 %, přičemž převážná část sledovaných znaků byla naopak větší na pravé straně. Statisticky významný byl rozdíl pouze u jednoho rozměru u žen (maximální délka os lunatum) a dvou rozměrů u mužů (maximální šířka kloubní plochy pro os lunatum na os triquetrum, maximální výška os hamatum), což může být důsledkem malého vzorku. Na obou stranách těla měli muži celkově větší rozměry kostí než ženy (s výjimkou jednoho rozměru napravo a šesti nalevo), ale větší pohlavní rozdíly se ukázaly na kostech pravého zápěstí. Při porovnání asymetrie s jinými populacemi nebyly pozorované obecné trendy rozdílů mezi stranami. Míra pohlavního dimorfizmu byla u čtyř kostí (os scaphoideum, os capitatum, os hamatum a os trapezoideum) podobná dimorfismu dvou dostupných srovnávacích populací (španělská a mexická), zatímco oproti anglické populaci byl dimorfismus pilotního vzorku na levé straně nižší, zejména v proximální řadě kostí zápěstí.
