Diversity and morphological variation of Central African torrent frogs (Petropedetes)

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje morfologické variabilitě rodu skáloskokan (Petropedetes), který je dnes řazen do samostatné čeledi Petropedetida rozšířené pouze v Africe. V úvodních kapitolách je rozebrán fylogenetický vztah rodu a jeho druhů k ostatním rodům z čeledi Petropedetidae a jak se v průběhu let měnilo taxonomické zařazení druhů, které v posledních letech prodělalo bouřlivý vývoj. Zmíněno je také rozšíření jak druhů rodu Petropedetes tak druhů, patřících do příbuzných rodů. Dále se práce zabývá ekologií žab rodu Petropedetes, která má značný vliv na morfologii druhů. Blíže jsou popsány morfologické zvláštnosti rodu, které spočívají zejména ve výrazném sexuálním dimorfismu. U samců se v období rozmnožování cyklicky zvýrazňují některé u žab poměrně neobvyklé znaky jako například kostěné bodce na palcích či tympanální papily. Význam těchto struktur není plně znám a možné hypotézy jsou diskutovány v kontextu ekologie a etologie rodu. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována druhové diverzitě, rozšíření a variabilitě morfologických znaků potenciálně využitelných v taxonomii. Z dosavadních dat je patrné, že diverzita rodu není doposud dostatečně poznaná a skrývá dosud formálně nepopsané druhy. Závěrem jsou prezentovány vlastní návrhy a poznatky autora k budoucím morfometrickým analýzám v rámci rodu Petropedets.

Abstract:

This thesis reviews species diversity and morphological variability of the genus Petropedetes, which is now classified into its own family Petropedetidae occurring only in Africa. The introductory chapters summarize information on phylogenetic relationships of the genus and species of other two genera of the family Petropedetidae, and review also taxonomic history of the group. Information on distribution of all species of Petropedetes and other related genera is given in next chapters. The work further reviews information on the ecology of the genus Petropedetes, which has a significant impact on the morphology of species. Morphological peculiarities of representatives of this family, which are relatively uncommon among frogs, are described in details. These morphological peculiarities with cyclic occurrence only during breeding season (e.g. bony spikes on thumbs or tympanic papillae) are connected to the sexual dimorphism and have important role in behaviour of frogs, which is discussed in the context of ecology and ethology of the genus. Special attention is given to species diversity, distribution and variability of morphological characters, which could be potentially utilized in taxonomy. The present data shows that diversity of the genus is still underestimated and undescribed taxa are still hidden waiting for formal scientific descriptions. In conclusion are presented author’s suggestions and findings for future morphological analysis of the genus Petropedetes.
