Cryptic diversity of puddle frogs (Phrynobatrachus) from the Cameroon Volcanic Line

Abstract:

V posledním desetiletí bylo z Kamerunského vulkanického pohoří popsáno celkem pět nových druhů velikostně menších až miniaturních horských žab rodu Phrynobatrachus (Anura, Phrynobatrachidae). Pro rozpoznávání těchto morfologicky často obtížně hodnotitelných druhů jsou zásadní zejména genetické metody. Tato práce si klade za cíl shrnout dosavadní znalosti o celkem devíti horských druzích z monofyletické skupiny (obsahující tři nížinné druhy), zde nazývané jako tzv. druhy kamerunské radiace. V kontextu dosavadního poznání je pak dalším cílem zpracovat data – morfologická (včetně popisu pulce), genetická a akustická – a připravit je pro popis nového druhu zjištěného v pohoří Gotel (Mt. Gangirwal) na pomezí Kamerunu a Nigérie. Nový druh je morfologicky nejvíce podobný druhové skupině P. werneri, ačkoliv genetická data blízkou příbuznost nepodporují. Fylogenetické postavení tohoto nového druhu není uspokojivě vyřešeno ani na základě analýzy dat mitochondriální DNA. Analýza jaderné DNA však silně podporuje hypotézu, že se jedná o bazální evoluční linii v sesterském postavení ke všem ostatním druhům kamerunské radiace. Dále je diskutováno systematické postavení populace z nedalekého masívu Tchabal Mbabo, která je s novým druhem blízce příbuzná, ale vykazuje určitý stupeň odlišnosti.

Abstract:

Five rather small-sized to miniature montane species from the genus Phrynobatrachus (Anura, Phrynobatrachidae) have been described from the Cameroon Volcanic Line in the last decade. Genetic methods are crucial for identification of these often morphologically difficult-to-interpret species. This study aims to review the knowlege on nine montane species from the monophyletic group (contains also three lowland species), here named the Cameroon radiation. In the context of the current knowledge, the study further aims to proces data – morphological (including description of the tadpole), genetic, and acoustic – and to prepare it into the form of a description of new species, which was found in the Gotel Mts. (Mt. Gangirwal) in the Cameroon-Nigeria border area. The new species morphologically resembles species from the P. werneri group, although the genetic data does not support a close relationship with this group. Phylogenetic position of the new species is not resolved even based on a mitochondrial DNA data. However, an analysis of the nuclear DNA highly supports a basal evolutionary position within the Cameroon radiation with the new species in the sister position to all other remaining species. A systematic position of the population from the nearby Tchabal Mbabo Mts., which is closely related to the new species but shows certain differentiation, is discussed.
