Everyday Life of an Austrian Officer at the Russian Front Line during the World War I

Abstract:

Tématem předkládané diplomové práce je každodenní život rakouského důstojníka na ruské frontě během první světové války. Práce vychází z deníků a korespondence důstojníků rakousko-uherské monarchie, na jejichž základě se snaží podat obraz průběhu života na frontě. První kapitola představuje rakousko-uherskou armádu na přelomu 19. a 20. století, její složení, vývoj a změny v oblasti jejího uspořádání, výzbroje a výstroje; dále jezdectvo a důstojnický sbor. Ve druhé kapitole se zaměříme na průběh první světové války na ruské frontě. Třetí kapitola je potom stěžejní částí práce, věnuje se jednotlivým tématům každodenního života na frontě. Očima rakouských důstojníků tak získáme pohled do života v armádě během války i mimo vojenské operace; dále na jejich stravování a ubytování; na situaci zdravotní péče na frontě i válečná zranění samotná. Součástí této kapitoly je obraz krajiny Haliče, válkou zničených měst a vesnic, místního obyvatelstva i ruských nepřátel.

Abstract:

The theme of this diploma work is a day-to-day life of an Austrian officer on a Russian front during the First World War. The work is focused on diaries and correspondence of Austro-Hungarian officers on whose bases the life on the front is portrayed. The first chapter tries to portray the Austro-Hungarian Army at the turn of nineteenth and twentieth century ? its structure, progression and changes on fields of its settlement, armature and weaponry, and also cavalry and officer corps. The second chapter is focused on continuance of World War I in terms of the Russian front. The main part of this work is the third chapter which is aimed on different topics of ordinary life on the front. Upon the life stories of the Austro-Hungarian officers we can see the front-life not only during the War itself but also the ordinary events linked to that era. Also we can take a look at the eating and accommodations, health care on the front and war injuries. One part of this chapter is a portrait of Halič and its surroundings ? war damages on towns and villages of local people and their Russian enemies.
