In the first part of the thesis (chapters 1 to 7), we briefly introduce the topics of our research and we summarize some important tools used in studies of strongly correlated electron systems. Next (in chapters 8 and 9) we report on our main results concerning the electronic structure of the high-T c cuprate superconductors, and the excitonic condensation in the Hubbard model, respectively.
